Meet Bo-Yu Chen | Camera, Steadicam & Trinity Operator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bo-Yu Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bo-Yu, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
As a Camera Operator specializing in Steadicam and Trinity 2, my recent work includes the narrative feature “A Hip Hop Story,” released nationwide in AMC theaters, and “The K Town Killer,” screened at the Tribeca Festival. Additionally, I’ve collaborated with renowned stuntmen like Andy Le, Brian Le, and Joseph Le, known for their work on major movies from Marvel Studios and Disney.
My success stems from a blend of commitment and diligence. Operating a complex and specialized tool like the Steadicam demands extensive honing of skills, akin to the rigorous training of a professional athlete. Additionally, my technical proficiency in Steadicam and Trinity 2 sets me apart. As the sole specialist on set, I not only navigate and troubleshoot these intricate devices but also possess in-depth knowledge of cameras and camera support systems, enabling seamless communication with cinematographers and camera assistants.
Furthermore, my success is underpinned by robust interpersonal skills. In the collaborative realm of filmmaking, effective communication is paramount. As a camera operator, I find myself at the heart of the action, necessitating adept communication not only within the camera department but also across multiple departments. Facilitating smooth coordination between departments ensures the seamless execution of each shot, reinforcing the idea that filmmaking is indeed a team sport.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Navigating the world of steadicam has been a journey marked by dedication and formidable challenges. Mastering the technical intricacies of steadicam work demanded unwavering commitment. Rigorous training was essential to achieve the precision and speed required for this integral role on a film set. The physical toll of manipulating specialized equipment and the weight of responsibility associated with framing each shot heightened the stakes, compelling me to continually strive for excellence.
In addition to technical prowess, adapting to the fast-paced environment of the film industry posed its own set of hurdles. Steep learning curves were a constant companion, necessitating rapid adaptation to stay abreast of evolving technologies and techniques. Moreover, navigating the multifaceted dynamics of a film set required adept communication and collaboration skills. Balancing the diverse needs and personalities of various departments while ensuring seamless coordination amidst the hustle and bustle posed a significant challenge.
Guided by mentor Greg Smith, I embarked on a transformative journey of growth and development. Rigorous training sessions pushed the boundaries of my abilities, instilling in me a deep-seated understanding of the craft. Immersing myself in student productions allowed me to hone my skills in real-world scenarios, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and teamwork. Supported by a tight-knit community of colleagues in the steadicam realm, I emerged equipped with the confidence and resilience to tackle higher-stakes projects. With numerous feature film credits, music video, and commercial ventures to my name, I am poised to continue pushing the boundaries of camera operating, eager to embark on new challenges and leave an indelible mark on the industry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a tourist vacation, I would recommend exploring the iconic landmarks and cultural attractions of Los Angeles, from strolling along the Hollywood Walk of Fame to soaking up the sun at Santa Monica Pier. Additionally, Los Angeles boasts a vibrant culinary scene, offering a diverse array of dining experiences to tantalize the taste buds.
As a special treat, I would extend an invitation to accompany me to various industry events that showcase the heart of the movie industry. Los Angeles is teeming with opportunities for professionals to attend exclusive gatherings and premieres, providing an insider’s glimpse into the glamour and excitement of Hollywood. These events, in my opinion, are the hidden gems of the city, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
“I owe an immense debt of gratitude to my mentor, Greg Smith, whose pivotal role in my journey cannot be overstated. From the moment he introduced me to the world of camera operating, Greg ignited a passion within me and inspired my pursuit of becoming a camera operator. His comprehensive guidance equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to excel as a steadicam operator, laying the foundation for my success in the industry. As my career gained momentum, Greg’s unwavering support served as a constant source of motivation. Beyond technical proficiency, he imparted invaluable lessons on navigating and leading a film set with professionalism and finesse. Moreover, Greg broadened my horizons by introducing me to advanced techniques such as working with technocranes. With his illustrious career, having contributed to blockbusters like “John Wick,” “The Grinch,” and “Westworld,” Greg’s mentorship has been truly transformative, shaping me into the professional I am today.”
