We had the good fortune of connecting with Bradlee Jaay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bradlee, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music has always been my passion. As I pursued and completed various levels of education and professional pursuits I always felt an emptiness that only performing and creating music could fulfill. So I chose to put all of my energy and love into my artistic career because ultimately my happiness and fulfillment come first.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is made to make people love themselves as they are and the world around them enough to improve it in any way possible, big or small. I became the artist I am today by continuing to honor my craft in every season life has given me. The biggest secret to my success is perseverance. It’s never easy being an independent artist but it’s beyond enjoyable because I get to control how my art is distributed and communicated to whomever consumes it. I’ve learned to ask for help along the way and to always be a student to the craft. I want the world to know that my story IS my brand. Being from LA, the trials and tribulations I’ve overcome all inform my craft. My authenticity and intentionality are what make the music I sing and the lyrics write so relatable.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take them shopping at the Melrose Trading Post and American Vintage on Sunday then grab food at Genghis Cohen. We’d then grab drinks and a vibe that night a The Dime Bar. On Monday we’d grab brunch at The Coffee Co. and then go walk it off at Playa Del Rey and head down to Dockweiler for a beach day there and a bonfire at night. Tuesday we’d grab a smoothie at Simply Wholesome or grab coffee and hang out in Leimert Park and support the shops while listening to whatever jazz or reggae is playing outside. Wednesday we’d go to CAAM and the Science Center then Wine Wednesday at 1010 Wines for dinner. Thursday we’d take a hike or walk the Culver City stairs and eat in Downtown Culver City. Friday we’d buy jewelry at the Slauson Swapmeet (the only place I purchase my gold from), maybe take them to a studio session and then grab a late night brunch at the Court Cafe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my incredible village. My mother, Staci Williams, and Dad, Timothy Williams. My father, Eric Johnson and his partner Garry Bryant. My sisters Atta’ya Reed-Brown, Christen Johnson and Chayah Hampton, brothers Logan Gentry and Terrence Bryant and brothers in law Quincy Brown and Rafael Hampton. My nieces and nephew Madysen, Quincy and Ziyah as well as the rest of my family and friends that support all of my creative endeavors. You are appreciated.
