Meet Brandi Aguilar | Actress and Voice Actress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandi Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandi, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
I read the book “Unreal City” by A.R. Meyering. It’s a fiction novel, and A.R. Meyering was a close friend of mine. She unexpectedly passed away in August 2021. A.R. Meyering was her pen name. Her real name was Alex. She wrote several books and a recurring theme of all her books was death. Unreal City was a one book of hers I had not yet read at the time of her death, and it took me a year to order the book and read it because it would have just been too hard for me to right after she passed. The book is AMAZING by the way, it’s emotional in itself. I found myself wanting to keep reading more, and the book is SO Alex. Without giving away spoilers, I fell in love with the cat character Felix, that guides the protagonist throughout the story. After I read about the first 20 pages, I had to take a break from reading the book for a few days because it just made me miss Alex so much. Then I felt ready again to read it, and I finished the book in about 2 days. It was that amazing. So much of Alex is evident in the story. Authors always let their personality shine in their novels I feel, and Alex definitely let hers shine in this book. Although I absolutely loved the book and story, it made me feel so sad Alex left this world so soon and so young. Her and I became instant friends on the first day of 7th grade. I had no idea when we met she was going to be here for such a short time. It’s absolutely, incredibly devastating to have your friend suddenly die. You never get over it, you just move forward. But you never forget. I’ve had countless dreams of her telling me she’s ok. But I don’t know if they are really her or “just dreams”. I really really hope there is an afterlife so her and I can reunite one day. They say grief is just unexpressed love for that person, and I 100% agree with that. But she left behind 5 or 6 wonderful fiction novels for the world to enjoy forever. Her novels are a great way to really explore who Alex was. I hope she is proud of me, because I know I am very proud of her.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The career of any artist is truly a journey. Some years are good years and others are not so good years, career-wise. I have been working my butt off as an actress since I was 10 years old and I can definitely confirm it’s ever-winding and non-linear. I’ve had to learn how to embrace rejection, and see it more as a redirection to something better. I try and have a balanced life where I go outside and smell the roses. I started an Instagram page @mentalhealth4actors to talk about various mental health issues that specifically actors face. Actors need that. So badly. Especially because so much of what happens in our careers is out of our control.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
L.A. wise, I’d take them to Jim Morrison’s last house he was living in before he left L.A. for Paris, where he passed away. It is such a beautiful home! I’d also take them to the Golden Girls Restaurant. It’s too cute and the restaurant is set up like the Golden Girls set.
I’d take them to Blue Mondays, my favorite nightclub where they play nothing but 80’s and goth music.
Oh and you cannot forget the Whiskey-a-Go-Go. The Doors got their start there and played there many times in the 60’s. I go there often to see the Doors cover band “Wild Child” play all the time and it is so fun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My talented author friend, A.R. “Alex” Meyering. Friendship goes beyond infinity. Even if you are no longer physically here on this earth.
