We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Ferguson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It was partially out of obligation, being classically trained, & the son of parents who require their children to go to college. While studying at Berklee, my love for it grew, as well as the realization that a career in music isn’t impossible.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art developed from an idea I had in college, where I’d combine lush textures that create harmony over drums. I started by posting one beat a day on Soundcloud, while sending beats around to artists who made waves in the local scene. It absolutely was not easy, and it took years of working side jobs before I got any placements. The experience taught me that quitting is the only way to really fail; and that the journey never really ends.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are a lot of cool spots in LA! It all depends on the time of day & what you’re looking for.
For example; if you’re looking for some sun and maybe a workout, then a Runyon Canyon hike or a trip to Will Rogers State Beach would do the trick.
For food, you can’t go wrong with Papa Cristo’s Mediterranean Grill, every Korean BBQ spot in Koreatown, Masa’s in Echo Park or The Sketcher’s Food Spot (not a joke) in Gardena.
If you’re spontaneous, my favorite nighttime spots vary from weird, to very weird; try Bar Sinister Hollywood on Saturday nights (make sure you wear all black), Residuals for the goofiest karaoke on Earth or HMS Bounty for a boat themed laid-back night.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my mother! There is not a single person on earth who has supported me more than her; from driving my 9-year old self to early piano recitals, to helping out (to this day) if I ever have a question or am in need. My true #1 fan, & the only one who’s heard me sing “Creep” by Radiohead at full volume.
