We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, how does your business help the community?
A lot of us have professional goals and dreams. Whether it’s a more aligned job, better pay, more control over our time, etc., many of us want to feel good in our careers. And bigger than that, we want to build a life for ourselves that we enjoy and feel good about. Work is just a part of life after all. The problem is, most of us have a hard time actually achieving that. We spend our lives scraping by in careers we don’t even like, just to come home and vent to our loved ones about how much our jobs suck. Maybe you constantly wake up and immediately start dreading having to go to work. You try to make plans to jumpstart your career, but then life gets in the way and nothing happens.

The truth is, we all have the potential to unlock new levels in our career. It’s genuinely possible to wake up and NOT dread going to work. It’s genuinely possible to NOT be underpaid and overworked. To feel excited when someone asks “So what do you do for a living?” Be Gallant Coaching provides people with access to that possibility. I help people push past the barriers, pitfalls, and their own self-doubt to help them land jobs they actually want so they can make more money doing work that feels impactful and engaging.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a career coach, but more specifically I’m focused on the job search. My business is about helping primarily people of color land better work opportunities that actually pay them and bring them the fulfillment they may not already have. So people usually come to me burned out, frustrated, confused, struggling with imposter syndrome, etc. Daring to go after something better takes a certain bravery, and that’s why my business is called Be Gallant Coaching. I empower people to be brave, and I give them the tools they need to make a real life change for the better.

Honestly, I never told myself I wanted to be a coach. It’s just something I started doing for friends and family years ago and realized I really enjoyed it. From there, I kept learning how to improve, how to relate better, how to ask better questions. I got good at it. But starting a business is hard. Really hard. It’s a totally different skill set and it’s not as pretty as it seems from the outside. You have to constantly be learning. And win, lose, or draw, you have to consistently show up. Discipline and consistency are key. But I love what I do. I connect with the people I coach so the experience is more authentic and productive. Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’ll probably order pizza and watch Friday or Men In Black or something. I’m a proud introvert! But seriously there’s some cool breweries and bars in the LA Arts District downtown I like, so I’d probably take them to run around out there. Restaurant-wise, I like Roscoe’s, BCD Tofu House, Panini Kabob Grill, anywhere I can get good sushi. After that, we’d for sure head up to Santa Barbara and do some wine tasting, hiking, and chill at the beach. And then order pizza and watch movies!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely have to give a shoutout to my family and loved ones (they know who they are). They’ve supported me, given me well wishes and confidence, and helped me find motivation when it was hard. And they still do. They keep me grounded. I don’t know where I’d be without them.
