We had the good fortune of connecting with Bret Lockett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bret, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Betting on myself. I’ve always had to bet on myself throughout my life. It started on the football field and then led into business. I believe most people deal with the challenge of looking for someone else to help them build their dream. Every dilemma always comes down to this. Yes, you will have people who help you along your journey, but the heavy lifting has to be done by you.
I used to think that I should spend my time investing in certain companies or others’ ideas when I realized, why bet on someone else when I know how hard I’m willing to work for what I want.
Not to say other opportunities can’t be fruitful. I’m just saying that I’d rather put my money behind myself rather than anyone else.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My name is Bret Lockett. You might know me as the NFL safety who played for the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns, and the New York Jets. But what you might not know is that I’m also a serial entrepreneur, business coach, international speaker, & philanthropist.
I sit as an advisor on several boards, including the Flow Research Collective, the most extensive research collective on flow and peak performance in the world founded by best-selling author Steven Kotler.
I’m also an avid spokesperson for the people of the ethical treatment of animals, also known as PETA, and work with several other nonprofits here in Los Angeles like the Midnight Mission and Habitat for Humanity who work to make sure every family has a place to call home.
But lately, I’ve spent the last few years building multiple businesses from technology to aviation, consulting, and more. I currently own six businesses across 4 different industries. And I’ve been showing others how to do the exact same thing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents deserve almost all of the credit for getting me to this point. I don’t know where I would be without them.
