We had the good fortune of connecting with Breyana Meeks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Breyana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I graduated college, I moved home and after having almost four years of freedom, moving home was a big challenge. At that time it was a few years after the housing market crash and my mom, an underwriter for over 25 years, suggested I look into purchasing a home, instead of simply moving out and getting an apartment. So after six months of saving one entire paycheck and combining it with my previous savings, I had just enough savings to purchase a home. That investment provided me with a six figure net worth before the age of 30. After seeing how much of an impact it had on my life, I decided to become a real estate agent myself to do everything in my power to help every and any person around me to not only motivate them, but to show them that you can in fact, purchase a home with limited funds. I then, after being an agent for two years, wrote my book Home Buying on a Budget, which allowed me to reach others who may not be located within a real estate market that I am currently licensed in. Home Buying on a Budget goes a little more in depth than most real estate books in that it provides down payment assistance programs along with providing tips on how to get started with purchasing a home and shows just how attainable it can be to purchase a home for the first time homebuyer.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As of May 2021, there were more real estate agents than there were homes for sale. I feel that many have gotten into the industry because they are interested in the luxury lifestyle that it can provide for them. I got into this industry in order to help people and mostly to inform them that purchasing a home can be attainable for the average buyer. I specialize in looking for homes for the first time homebuyer and I aspire to help anyone, regardless of financial circumstances or background, to inspire the into going down the path of homeownership. While purchasing a home is one of the most challenging steps as well as one of the largest investments many will make, it can be one of the most rewarding returns on investments, providing many with generational wealth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being a native So Cal girl, I am all about the local spots in combination with popular places that you will only find in Los Angels county. So if I have a friend coming in from out of town, lets say for the weekend, I am taking them to 2ND & PCH where we can dinner and do some shopping and grab dessert to finish off the night. Saturday morning I would wake up and head to the Attic for brunch where we would order their infamous Mac n’ Cheetos and biscuits and gravy. After brunch we would later head to Perch for dinner and after to The Association for a fun night out. To finish out the weekend, Sunday morning, before my friend headed home, I would wake them up early to go to The Getty museum where we could stimulate our minds and enjoy the beautiful rose gardens outside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to give my mom a major shoutout. My mother has been extremely instrumental in my love as well as my understanding of the real estate industry. I always tell people, while I was able to financially able to purchase my home, my mother was very instrumental in ensuring that I not only received a down payment assistance program, but in making sure that I entered into good terms with my mortgage. Had my mother not been there to coach me along through the process, I may not have been afforded to opportunity to take a $5,000 initial investment and turn it into a six figure net worth. My mother is the reason that I not only purchased my home at the age of 23 but also the reason that I got into the real estate industry all together. Without her there is no me!
