We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian L.a. Compton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi BRIAN L.A., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was young, my father played a significant role in inspiring my entrepreneurial spirit. As a police officer for the City of Los Angeles, he had a stable career, yet he was always seeking additional sources of income. He involved me and our family in many of his ventures, regardless of their success. From real estate classes to wellness sales and even seasonal clothing sales, he explored various opportunities. I believe it was during this time that the seed was planted for my desire to own my own business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Allthatandsum, is dedicated to providing exceptional customer service and high-quality products to our HBCU, Divine 9, Masonic, and O.E.S. members. We specialize in offering premium items tailored for these organizations, along with custom orders that highlight our commitment to meeting our clients’ needs. What truly sets us apart in the industry is our focus on customer satisfaction. We strive to create an outstanding shopping experience, fostering relationships that contribute to our success. At Allthatandsum, we aim to provide a professional yet family-oriented atmosphere that leaves our clients eager to share their experiences with others.

I am particularly proud of our ability to adapt and thrive in a competitive market. One of the most exciting developments has been the success of our brick-and-mortar location in Los Angeles, where clients can enjoy an in-person shopping experience. Additionally, we have established ourselves as one of the premier pop-up shop vendors in both Southern and Northern California, with expansions reaching Seattle, Las Vegas, Arizona, and beyond. These milestones are a testament to our hard work and dedication to our mission.

The journey to where I am today has certainly not been easy. I have faced numerous challenges, including funding issues, market entry hurdles, and stiff competition. To navigate these obstacles, I focused on building a strong support network and continuously learning from my experiences. Resilience and adaptability have been crucial; I have learned to pivot when necessary and to view failures as valuable lessons on the path to growth.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned the importance of community and collaboration. Surrounding myself with passionate individuals who share a common vision has made a significant difference. I also recognize the need to stay true to my values while remaining open to new ideas and approaches.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that we are not just about business; we are about building meaningful relationships and creating a positive impact. Our story is rooted in hard work, community engagement, and a genuine desire to uplift others. I believe that success is best when shared, and I am committed to making a difference through our endeavors.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would ensure they had the best time ever with a week-long itinerary packed with fun and memorable experiences.

Day 1: Disneyland
We’d kick off the trip at Disneyland, as I’m a huge fan! There’s nothing quite like the magic of the parks, and I’d want to share that joy with them. We’d spend the day enjoying rides, dining at the various eateries, and soaking in the enchanting atmosphere.

Day 2: Allthatandsum
Next, no trip to California would be complete without shopping at Allthatandsum. With something for everyone, it’s the perfect place to find unique items and custom orders that celebrate our culture.

Day 3: Culinary Adventures
I’d take them to Pip’s on La Brea for a fantastic meal and some entertainment. The vibrant atmosphere and delicious food would make for a memorable evening.

Day 4: Shopping Outlets
We’d dedicate a day to exploring the numerous shopping outlets in the area. California has a wealth of options, and I’d love to help my friend find some great deals and unique finds.

Day 5: Beach Day
We’d spend a day at the beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the beautiful California coastline. I’d recommend heading to Santa Monica for its lively boardwalk and iconic pier.

Day 6: Cultural Exploration
A visit to Los Angeles wouldn’t be complete without exploring some cultural landmarks. I’d take them to the Getty Center for its stunning art collection and beautiful gardens, followed by a stroll through the vibrant streets of downtown L.A.

Day 7: Nightlife
To cap off the trip, we’d experience the local nightlife. Whether it’s a rooftop bar with stunning views or a live music venue, I’d make sure to show my friend the lively side of California.

This itinerary offers a mix of adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences, showcasing some of the most exciting people and places that make this state so special!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many individuals who have played a crucial role in my success, starting with my parents, who have always been my primary support system. I want to specifically acknowledge Adrian Duncan, Latoya Reed, Camille Verdes, Shay Alexander, and many others who continue to contribute to my journey today.

Adrian Duncan, owner of Trojan Tax, Duncan Hauling, and our co-owned clothing brand YOUCANTTEACHHUSTLE, has been a tremendous source of inspiration and motivation. He has witnessed the ups and downs of my humble beginnings and has supported me through the early stages of my business ventures.

Additionally, the City of Compton, Northeast Louisiana University of Monroe, Grambling State University, and my friends and classmates have all significantly impacted my success. Their support for my business and involvement in events that promote exposure for my company, Allthatandsum, have been invaluable.

I cannot conclude without recognizing my fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., for their unwavering support. I also extend my gratitude to the entire Divine Nine and HBCU support networks that empower us in business.
