We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Luong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance changed from working around the clock constantly to taking frequent breaks and/or days off. After experiencing frequent cycles of burn out, I’ve learned to set time aside “away from work” and ask myself how I’m feeling. Do I feel exhausted? Do I need a break? I’m learning to look after myself so I can in turn have the ability to work harder.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art consists of pointillism on a dark colored backdrop. I either work digitally to create rendered black and white imagery, or traditionally with inks on paper to create minimalistic landscapes. The pointillism art style was very different from the type of art I was creating for my illustration career; I started creating these pointillism pieces for art exhibits and gallery shows since I wasn’t satisfied with the style of artwork I was using for my freelancing. When creating my pieces, I’m learning that less is more. I’ve had to scrap and start over artworks due to adding too many dots, colors, etc.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is a plant nerd like me, so we’d probably visit local cacti nurseries and plant shops. Visiting a cacti nursery in 102F weather is grueling but fun for us. A week long backpacking trip in the Sierras would be great, too. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Big thanks to my parents who supported my decision to pursue a career in the arts!
