We had the good fortune of connecting with Brina Gibson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brina, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is either a pro or a con depending on what you make it. I think a person who takes risks is more likely to make it than someone who doesn’t. Like they say “Scared money don’t make money” & I honestly believe in that. Some people miss out on the money they could make thinking about everything that could go wrong instead of thinking of everything that can go right. For me personally, taking risk almost always pays off. I believe faith without works is dead. You have to do your part & God will do his. I know he wouldn’t bring me this far to fail me now. My best piece of advice is to believe that you have a God & that your tribe will gravitate to you naturally. No one is you & that is your superpower.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is unique because I am always looking for ways to set my cosmetic line apart from the rest. I am the first full blown Belizean owned cosmetic line. Although, I love fenty, I want women to know that even if you came out of the trenches like me you can do it, you can do whatever you want as long as you believe it first. Never give up on yourself & never half ass anything. You will get what you put in & if you put in 100% that’s exactly what you will get. I’ve learned that networking is very important & that business is not always about the money but about opening doors for more opportunities & longevity. I want my brand to be a household name like Mary Kay & others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Malibu to geoffreys for dinner. Maybe the Santa Monica pier for games & rides. I love to dance so that I would include somewhere. I definitely think Big Sur is a sight to see. Speaking personally I’m more of an out of country traveler.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my story, I definitely think my sisters (Janine & Elvie) & my mother (Beverly$ play a role in my success. I was raised by nothing but women who knew how to hustle. I know that I can do anything I put my mind to, because of them. They have all taught me what strength & endurance means. I just applied it to business, making me the first LLC owner in my immediate family. They now all have LLCs under their belts and I couldn’t be happier, being the baby to start this trend in my family.
