We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business isn’t something I ever imagined myself doing, to be honest, but given everything I want to do in the mental health field for people who limited access to resources, it just made the most sense. I needed to create the foundation for You’re Not Finished to be a legitimate organization so that I could build trust between myself & those who listen to the podcast, read the blogs, & receive giveaway items. I also wanted to put You’re Not Finished in the position to eventually receive grants/financial assistance to achieve all I’d like to accomplish & make sure that I could connect easier to other organizations that have the same or similar cause as mine.
What should our readers know about your business?
It was absolutely not easy to get where I am today regarding You’re Not Finished. This is over 10 years in the making because I actually abandoned the idea in 2015 due to not feeling confident enough in myself & struggling with severe depression & anxiety. The lie behind that was my belief that I wasn’t qualified to help or encourage others; that I didn’t have the capacity to do so.
I had to do a lot of work on myself in order to get You’re Not Finished going again, & through therapy, wise counsel, the grace of God, and the application of what I learned through those things, I was able to revive You’re Not Finished in 2021. Obtaining my education at Azusa Pacific University & finally completing my psychology degree there plays a huge role in the success of You’re Not Finished as well. Not only was I able to understand from a scientific standpoint why mental health is important & the differences in the various mental illnesses people tend to struggle with, but I also gained an understanding – a non-judgmental understanding – of how God addresses mental health. It was freeing for me, & this was something I couldn’t keep to myself, especially since so many people need help.
Since You’re Not Finished became a business last year, I’ve been able to help & encourage hundreds of listeners through the podcast, the blog has reached over 10,000 views, & I have had giveaway winners in Tennessee, Michigan, Philadelphia, & Florida. Soon, I’ll be launching merchandise & 10% of the profits will be going to 4 mental health organizations, 2 of which are local to Los Angeles. In a field where therapy & counseling is difficult to get access to, YNF serves as an organization that aims to remove the barriers to contribute to that difficulty. Additionally, since Christian theology is integrated into the content that’s produced & added to information based on research, YNF helps remove stigma in Christian circles. But it is important to note that YNF serves to benefit EVERYONE who listens, reads, or enters the quarterly giveaways – people aren’t required to subscribe to the Christian faith to receive anything YNF offers.
Mental health doesn’t discriminate & neither will YNF.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m based in Pasadena, & while there are a ton of places to hang out & shop here I would actually take us on a drive to Balboa Park in San Diego. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pasadena & Old Town is a great place to eat well, do some shopping, &/or watch a movie. But I love Balboa Park! It’s been a while since I’ve been, but a friend & I made a day out of visiting the museums, listening to music, being by the water, & getting some good food. If you’re giving me a week, though we could hang out in Pasadena for a couple of days, head to San Diego for a few more, then make our way back.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give credit to God before anyone, for sure. If I wasn’t a Christian I wouldn’t have the support, love, wisdom, & encouragement I needed to get to this point. You’re Not Finished wouldn’t even exist without God’s inspiration. I’m also thankful to my mom & a couple of good friends for consistently praying & reminding me to not give up when things get overwhelming. I’ve learned so much in the past few years due to my education at Azusa Pacific University, Google/YouTube University (haha), & from a resource called SCORE online that is filled with a ton of resources on starting/sustaining your business.
