We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittni, Bobbi & Kyla and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittni, Bobbi & Kyla, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting The Heels wasn’t just a business venture; it was born out of the fiery passion that consumed our hearts, fuelled by our deep love for singing and songwriting. It was a very organic and unique development for us – we began our journey at Kyla’s cafe, Buddha-Full, where Brittni worked as a barista and Bobbi was a regular customer. We would get together after hours at the cafe with whoever else wanted to join and play music just to feel good and work through whatever we were going through in our personal lives. People walking by would start to gravitate outside the cafe while we played our music which then snowballed into creating a band and performing for audiences as local venues. So, as we continued to write music from our hearts, we yearned to craft melodies and weave stories that would leave a mark and touch people on a deep level through the healing power of music. We created stories that would make people laugh, cry, feel empowered or think deeper. Creating our music was our way of chasing dreams and forging an intimate connection with our audience. The growth in our band and fanbase has been a testament to the powerful, familial connection we share, both in our personal bonds and in the harmonious blend of our voices. We embarked on this journey with hearts aflame, united by an unwavering love for country music. Our aim was to create music that not only resonated deeply with our audience but also wove a tapestry of stories that touched their hearts. Incorporating as a business and taking our musical journey seriously just came naturally to us early on. It was about chasing dreams together and forging a unique sisterhood through the remarkable healing power of music and harmony.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are a little outside the box. We don’t follow trends unless we enjoy them ourselves and we really just follow our hearts and do what we want to do. Music has broken our hearts in the past while trying to chase what people want so when we joined together, we chose to be our authentic selves and empower each other and others to have integrity to our/your art. We love the music industry so much but we feel there is a lot of room to grow. We have sassy lyrics and push boundaries with them. We speak our minds and don’t tend to play it “safe” all the time. Up until joining forces as a band we held very successful full time careers in fields outside of music, holding onto the limiting belief that because music is an art form, it had to be a hobby and we had to establish “real jobs.” It took uniting our entrepreneurial minds and business experience to commit to leaving those careers in the past and shifting our focus to a full-time profitable career in music.
We feel we are quite unique in the way that we joined together – most bands are friends first then start a band, but we started a band and then became best friends! We all had solo careers in different genres, with a common love for country music, before joining together, so we create a unique sound with a family- like blend. Since our band was built on the foundation of healing, which is where our name came from, we are proud to include sound healing elements like gongs, tuning forks and specific healing frequencies within our music. We incorporate sound healing into mainstream music which we have never seen be done before. Our goal is to reach a large audience and spread love across the world – #heeltheworld has become our motto. Being in mainstream music, we have big dreams of performing at large arenas and stadiums as well as music festivals and big events, so we have worked with top stage-coaches and crafted our live show to be energetic, engaging and entertaining.
Professionally, we have always followed our intuition. This has worked for us because we have never felt that we got steered in a wrong direction. Since we all had separate music careers before starting The Heels, we have 3 different paths that lead us here. Bobbi was a child star and has had hits on Canadian country radio since she was 11, Kyla has been trained in and had success in every genre from rock to opera to musical theatre. Brittni grew up in a musical family, centred around rock/pop/mainstream country, and learned how to harmonize with her family when she was about 7. We have all had our personal challenges thats for sure, but we overcame them with faith that everything works out as its intended – if we didn’t go through our personal journeys we may never have found eachother.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since leaving North Vancouver, where we met and formed the band, we have all moved out of the city across the province from East to West. British Columbia has a wide and diverse landscape which gives many different opportunities for exploration. From surfing in Tofino and enjoying the beautiful coastal oceans and beaches, to the city life of Vancouver, snow lovers paradise in Whistler, BC’s wine country in the Okaganan, the majestic scenery of the Kootenays, an so much more! The area is so large that we have deserts, rainforests, tropical-looking beaches and rustic mountains. Theres something for everyone in our home Province of BC.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d love to give a shoutout to our main man, we call him our “Heelsband” because he basically puts the “he” in “heels” – Anthony Fiddler of Fiddler Productions. He has been with us from the start from a co-writer and guitar player, to band leader and producer. He is now married to Brittni and they have a 20 month old daughter. He comes on the road with us and helps carry our luggage and keeps us organized. We owe a lot to this talented guy!
