Meet Brooke Becker | Actor and Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Becker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing that anyone not in the entertainment industry probably isn’t aware of is exactly how difficult it is to book both the smaller and larger roles they see on television. For every role, there are usually at minimum several hundred actors submitted by their agent (usually into the thousands). Only about 50 of those actors are invited to submit an audition, and then maybe three are pinned. Only one books the job. Out of thousands! This is why I don’t take any audition or job for granted.
I think a lot of people watch actors on TV and think “that looks pretty easy.” However, acting looks easy when the actor is good! Try doing it with fifty to sixty people watching you while trying to hit your mark and be in the moment while remembering your lines. I have huge respect for all actors of all stages in their careers.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an actor and a writer living and working in Los Angeles. I most recently appeared on The Dropout, Head of the Class, and season five of Grown-Ish, and I’m so excited for everything else that’s in the works. Acting is truly my passion and I’m so grateful to be able to wake up each day knowing that I’m living out the dreams I always had for myself–even on hard days.
For every audition that I’ve booked, there have been dozens that I haven’t booked. The best advice I ever got was from a casting director who told me that to truly be happy in this industry, you have to “learn to go from rejection to rejection with great enthusiasm.” So that’s what I do. There are certainly difficult days, jobs I really want that I don’t book, and creeping doubts, but overall, I try to focus on being grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.
I also love to write, and among other projects, I’m currently finishing up my first solo pilot which I’m very excited about. I’m looking forward to everything that this year brings!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in LA are absolutely the Huntington Library and Gardens, Echo Park lake, any and all book stores, Erin Mackenna’s gluten free and vegan bakery, LACMA, and the Academy Museum.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out Kemma Filby and Walker Barnes of Seasick Studios! I had the privilege of working with Kemma and Walker on season 1 of their show Parallel as a writer and recurring actor. It is so difficult to create anything, especially an indie project, and they manage to do it at such a high level with some pretty incredible people. It’s a wonderful thing to watch those around you make big moves, and I have no doubt that they will do some incredible things. Head over to @seasickstudios_ and check them out!
