We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryan Danial Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bryan Danial, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Aurora, Il A city/suburb of Chicago.
I think aurora impacted me in a cultural way. My hometown is home to a lot of different cultures and traditions, races and religions. My family moved a lot but we moved throughout the city of Aurora. This made me very aware of culture and the importance of it. From language to arts to fashion.
My work deals with race, culture, popular culture, celebrity, subcultures, and random acts of living.
So in that way my upbringing in Aurora has influenced me and my brand greatly. The understanding of human nature is in full effect. And my work reflects that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a mixed media artist and illustrator. I specialize in collage. I like to think of my art as something that was written from a psychic typewriter. I take bits of images from vintage magazines and books to organize in a way that tells a story of the world I inhabit. This is usually done in a way where I am cutting, glueing, and painting without thought until an image or concept starts forming on whatever substrate I’m working with.
I’ve learned the process of creation is important. Trial and error is necessary. Failure is essential to success. Just get to creating and eventually it will all make sense.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Aurora, McCarty Mills ! Love that place! I’d take a visitor to all the fun places around town in Aurora and Chicago. We gotta dance somewhere.
I dig camping so we’d definitely hit the forest out In Ottawa, Il too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout out to my children for inspiration, to my partner Sheli Massie, my parents, to my cousin Michael Harden, GroomLife, Shout out to CulturePower45 , And to my friends in and outside of artist community. Respect and love.
Just remember don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!
