Meet Burgundy Sena Appau

We had the good fortune of connecting with Burgundy Sena Appau and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Excitement can be found in every facet of life and within every experience, and thus one is able to channel said experiences into one’s work. It may be going to the cinema to watch a movie, having lunch with a friend, a random phone call, or attending mass on a Tuesday evening. I guess I am excited by the little things in life and that has helped propel me this far and I have come to realize that most of what feels or appears as challenges most of the time is an invitation to advancement or leveling up so I tend to embrace it all and sometimes I probably would have completed a project without realizing the challenges that came with it. Just persevere, and oh, patience- a rather underrated quality these days. We all want things fast fast, chop chop these days. Gentle reminder, leave room for patience.
Also for some reason, at any point in time when I think of quitting, I end up having a conversation with someone who is able to shift my perspective or I watch a movie that allows me to see things in a new light of sorts or I just get a really cool idea to pursue and everything just goes back to normal. And it’s always at the time when I feel like quitting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a rather boring individual when it comes to this, but if I were to plan such a thing, hmmmmm.
Silverbird Cinemas for a movie marathon on Monday, Tea Baa for lunch on Tuesday, my favourite Fufu ( a meal of pounded plantains and cassava usually served with a variety of hot goat meat or fish soups) spot on Wednesday, perhaps, and Gallery hopping on Thursday at Gallery 1957, Citizen Projects, The Mix Design Hub, Berj Gallery, Dot Ateliers, and LAFA.
Friday, we will probably make some art together in the studio so that they can take that back with them then rest at the beach (Laboma or Rehab) on Saturday. And if it’s that time of the month, then we can do ENTRANCED on Sunday night, which is a monthly event that showcases the hottest DJs in town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Every person you encounter has an impact on you. It’s up to you to make it bring you down or to uplift you. I choose the latter. It will be difficult to mention a few out of the many because they all come together to form a whole, which may not be the same without all such persons and experiences. I sometimes like to think that it is the hand of God that has directed me on this path. I guess we have it here, big shouts to the creator and then to every single person I have encountered- friends, collectors, Winston(provided a studio space to make work), Emmanuel(artist and friend), Dela Anyah (artist and friend) ,Desire Appau (my de facto photographer), its a really long list.
