We had the good fortune of connecting with C.J. Stussi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi C.J., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
In my triple capacity as an entertainment attorney, actress, and producer I believe one has to take risks because otherwise you don’t stand out to your competition.
As the founder of C.J. Stussi Law, taking risks means to be proactive to get clients. As an actress, taking risks means to reveal things about yourself that you naturally wouldn’t. Lastly, as a producer, it’s about having the courage to create new things, to go against the stream and to continue believing in your vision.
E.g. my social cause TechMood.org about a healthy life with technology and my feature film trilogy “Allured” are novelties – which is good. On the downside, there is no precedent and it’s harder to convince investors to contribute because there is no similar concept that has been successful and “test-driven.”
Risk is a part of all my jobs. Taking risks scares me. Taking risks excites me. It’s one of the reasons that my life doesn’t always feel easy to live but is so worth living.
What should our readers know about your business?
I combine several professions – actress, attorney, producer, and writer. Each business poses challenges and there are several habits that helped me overcome them.
The trial-and-error learning has helped me succeed. There’s even a German saying which translates to “trying overrides studying.” I have made it a habit to try things – even if it’s just a gut feeling that goes against convention and logic. This approach has taught me more things about life than what I’ve learnt from completing two master’s degrees.
Another reason for my success is that I’m hardworking – also because I love my jobs – and even if it sounds cliché – if you work a bit every day towards your goals – at some point opportunity will meet preparation.
Lastly, I have a daily regimen that I call my mental cleanse. It’s basically a way to reset myself every day to a positive – everything-is-possible outlook on life. My experience is that life is not how it is but how you perceive it to be.
For my brands, my success factors are:
C.J. Stussi is my acting brand. Here, my biggest success factor is that I’m reliable & dependable – something that isn’t even considered a virtue in Switzerland – but has generated me many jobs here in Hollywood.
As an attorney at C.J. Stussi Law, it is my hands-on experience as an actress and producer that clients appreciate because I understand their practical daily challenges and cater to it.
As the founder of the social cause TechMood.org and the writer/producer of the movie trilogy “Allured,” it is my combination of creativity and business sense that drive the brands.
As the creator of the educational film “Nameless” about psychological manipulation, which is sold to colleges, the success stems from transforming my own experiences into a healing tool for other people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When friends from out of town visit they are usually from Europe and like to walk. So, I take them for a beach walk starting in Marina Del Rey and ending in Santa Monica. We end the stroll on the Ferris Wheel on the Santa Monica Peer.
Another thing I love to do is take them for an evening snack at the Skybar at the Mondrian Hotel from where you have a nice overview over the city and can hop in the pool to cool off.
My friends are all very active so I take them surfing in Malibu, hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains, to see a play, and to eat at the Farmer’s Market at the corner of Fairfax and Third Street.
Beside all the tourist attractions – which are a must – a visit to Yosemite National Park is mandatory.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people who encouraged me and helped me grow.
I’m grateful to my family and friends because they love me and constantly push me to be better.
The Basler Kindertheater – a local theatre in my home town where I acted throughout my childhood – gave me my first stage experience and was the place where I decided to become a professional actress.
The Swiss Study Foundation – which mission is to promote young people who are willing and capable of assuming leading positions in all sectors of society – encouraged me in my endeavor to be outstanding. In Switzerland there is a certain contempt for people who “want too much.”
Monte Hellman – my first roommate in Hollywood – mentored me as a director and artist with his deep insight.
I’m also blessed for the teachings at the Lee Strasberg Institute (Sasha Krane introduced me to practical filmmaking and Tom Badal was an artistic inspiration), the Ruskin School of Acting (especially John Ruskin who believed in me), and the Beverly Hills Playhouse (Allen Barton taught me to get out of my head) as well as for the support of my former acting teachers Adam Lazarre White and Jane Fleiss Brogger.
Art has always been very important in my life and inspired me greatly. Thus, I extend my thanks to all artists for being artists.
