We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Alohilani and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caitlin, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want people to remember me for my heart, and for how I made them feel. I think that the core desire of every human being is to feel seen, known, and loved, and I hope that through my everyday interactions, relationship building, and photographing, that people feel those things in my presence. I hope to spread light and love in this world, because we sure can’t get enough of it!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art, my photography, is a reflection of how I see the world. I believe this perspective has been shaped significantly by my upbringing in Hawai’i, and my values. Born and raised on the island of O’ahu, the “Aloha Spirit” is an essential part of who I am and how I strive to serve my amazing clients throughout Southern California and beyond. My business is shaped by the core values of gratitude, kindness, and aloha. I am passionate about spreading joy in this world through timeless imagery and the celebration of love. I hope that my art reflects the great gratitude I have for all the beauty of this world we live in, both outside our homes and inside them. Being a business owner, it often feels like I wear “all the hats” and then some. I am constantly learning how to improve in all aspects, and that’s part of the fun. When you love what you do with a raging passion, none of it feels like work. I always feel re-energized when I get to create with my camera, meet new people, and learn about their stories. That human connection is so life-giving! I think one of the most important lessons to learn early on in this industry, is that YOU are your biggest asset. The more you put yourself out there, the more you will attract like-minded industry friends and clients. Another important lesson I’ve learned is that it’s “progress over perfection,” every time. Let go of your fears, and take the first step. Be open to feedback, and have a growth mindset in all that you do. I wake up every day filled with so much gratitude and excitement to photograph relationships and major milestones for the kindest of souls. I document it all—from weddings, to maternity sessions, to newborns and families. Enriching the lives of others through beautiful imagery is my passion. Best feeling ever? Making others feel celebrated and beautiful just as they are, through all of life’s stages. I do what I do because I believe the joyful highs in life should be treasured, and that celebrating love makes the world go ’round! For weddings in particular, I believe that a wedding is about so much more than beautiful photos: it’s about the marriage, it’s about the union. It’s about freezing your happiest, peak moments in time to be cherished through whatever highs and lows may follow in your walk together. I believe your photos should reflect the beautiful connection you’ve built with your person in the most honest, authentic way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
What a fun question! If I had a friend in town, and I wanted to give him or her the ultimate SoCal experience, it would definitely involve brunch on a splendid outdoor patio somewhere local to Pasadena, one of my favorite cities in LA (think True Foods). Followed perhaps by a hike and beach day in Malibu, an afternoon treat from Sidecar Doughnuts in Santa Monica (the BEST DONUTS EVER), and dinner at Bestia and cocktails in hipster Highland Park or a glamorous rooftop bar overlooking the city lights, to top it all off. Throw in some Griffith Observatory star gazing and McConnell’s ice cream, if you can handle! Can you tell I love my treats??
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate this “shoutout” to my amazing parents and family, who’ve always supported my creative interests and instilled in me confidence that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I believe that so much of our adult lives are shaped by our childhoods, and the home we grew up in. I feel so fortunate to have never questioned the love my parents had for me. They have taught me the value of optimism, kindness, persistence, and resilience, which have gotten me through many peaks and valleys in my 20-something years of life thus far.
