We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Carleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
This is such a loaded question, and as an actor and a filmmaker, it is a question I avoid thinking about at all costs. It is a detrimental thought. Even after I have heard 100 straight no’s. Even after I have $1 left in my bank account. Even after the majority of women in my age category are married with children, buying a house, and having kids. This is what I signed up for. Creating makes me happy and fuels my fire. I truly do not want to do anything else. Is it hard, yes. Is it at most times grueling, and exhausting, yes. If I wanted to have a guaranteed salary for the rest of my life I would have chosen a different career. I have heard many artists say “If you could be a tiny bit happy doing ANYTHING else, go do that.” Because this path is not easy and you need to have a strong mind to be able to push past all of the rejection. I love acting and I love filmmaking. It brings me immense joy, so I am so grateful to be able to be doing what I love, I never want to take that for granted or give it a second thought. I just have to keep DOING THE WORK. That is being an artist. The “yeses” come from yourself when you work on your craft, and who knows, maybe you get paid for some of them. But it doesn’t matter because you are doing what you love and are passionate about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a filmmaker, I gravitate towards stories about second chances, and I love to find the humor in things. I am so excited to be working on my first feature film as a director. FANTASY PONY is a hilarious mockumentary about girls who collect model horses. I am currently in the process of funding the movie, with the writer and my co-producer, Caroline Newton. There are so many obstacles to getting people to give you money, but for every twenty people who tell you “No”, there is one person who will say “Yes”. You just have to KEEP GOING. If you believe in yourself and your project, that passion is contagious.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them hiking in the Topanga or Santa Monica mountains! I love to be outside in the sunshine. I need to smell the grass and look at the birds. It refreshes me and helps clear my mind of negativity so I can be more creative. Then we would drive down the PCH to Broad Street in Malibu and get a lobster roll, walk across to the sandy beach to eat, and enjoy the sunset! Swimming is optional, but highly recommended! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My talented and funny accountability partner, Shannon Phipps. We talk twice a week, every week of the year, for the last eight years. She pushes me and encourages me to keep going, even when I am tired, and she reminds me it’s okay to rest when I need it.
