We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin Higgason and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Coming from working as a graphic designer at a corporate firm, it definitely wasn’t an easy choice to let go of the steady stream of income and begin my journey as a wedding photographer— but I’m so glad I did! A few weeks before I quit that job in 2018 I went to a wedding photography workshop, where the amazingly talented Anni Graham was one of the speakers. I remember her saying “what’s the worst that could happen if you quit your 9-5 and go full time as a wedding photographer? Worst case you could always find another job”. I totally agreed and decided to take the plunge even though I had never even photographed a wedding before. Besides the beautiful photos I got for my portfolio from going to that workshop, it was also great because I made a ton of likeminded photographer friends. They’ve referred me to clients, and I’ve even got to assist them at some of their weddings which helped build my portfolio a ton in the beginning. And of course I definitely wouldn’t be where I am without Instagram. It has been the biggest tool in getting my work seen and I’m so grateful for that!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I recently moved to Los Angeles, so I’m still discovering new and cool spots all the time… I feel like the possibility of things to do here is endless! A few of my favorite areas are Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Malibu and Hollywood/ Beverly Hills. I’ll list a few of my favorite things to do and places to go for each!

Venice Beach: Breakfast at Cafe Gratitude or Flake on Rose Ave. Go shopping on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. The Butchers Daughter is a great option for lunch or dinner. Walk around the Venice canals.

Santa Monica: Walking along the boardwalk and going to the pier to ride the ferris wheel is always fun! 3rd street promenade has a ton of great stores if you want to do more shopping. Get a massage at The NOW.

Malibu: Beach day! Malibu has some of the most beautiful beaches. Point Dume is one of my favorites, and you can do a little hike there as well. For lunch, Malibu Farm on the pier is very cute and has some great views.

Hollywood/ Beverly Hills: Obviously there are a ton of touristy things to do in these areas which can be a lot of fun (Sightseeing, studio tours, walk of fame, etc). The Beverly Hills sign and (window) shopping on Rodeo Drive. Drinks and snacks at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Dinner at Yamashiro— this place is a whole experience and has some great views of the city! There are also a ton of cool hotel bars and speakeasies in the area. Good Times at Davey Wayne’s is one of my favorites!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been so lucky to have the most amazing clients! They’ve been such a support to me and my business, from posting praise on Instagram to sweet reviews and referrals. I can’t thank them enough!
