We had the good fortune of connecting with Cal Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cal, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to be a musician because it pushes and challenges me in the best ways. Take songwriting: It can be tricky. It can be a bit mysterious at times. Not every song is written the same way. Once you write a song it’s amazing. Yet there are so many ways to get to a completed song that the way you just did may not work for the next one!

For example, we’ve written a song in twenty minutes (The Mystery) and another one took over five years (Red Sun). Writing songs is like climbing a mountain where the terrain changes hour to hour, day to day. It’s like the staircases in Hogwarts! It’s exciting, sometimes frustrating, and exhilarating (just to name a few of the emotions I’ve experienced while writing a song…).

I continue to pursue it because I’ll never have it mastered. Twenty years in, it is still so much fun.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are a rock band.We make music that showcases each of us well: The drums hit hard, guitars are loud and Spence sings his ass off.

We make music we want to hear. I was just talking to my wife about this the other week. I told her I continually have the thought of “I wish Spotify had the ‘perfect’ song for me to listen to right now…” And I realized that by making music as WD-HAN I’m able to fulfill that for myself and (hopefully) others.

Deciding to move to LA and pursue our dream of playing music is probably the biggest decision we’ve made yet and it’s paid off so far. We’re really enjoying it, meeting new people in the industry and playing these iconic venues!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d take them out hiking in Griffith Park, grab some Thai food at Luv 2 Eat and definitely make a stop at Xing Fu Tang in Alhambra! (Best Boba in LA!)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our families for sure. They’ve been supportive from the beginning. They were very excited for us to come out to LA and succeed, so that’s what we’re doing!
