Meet Calvin J. Miller | Dancer, Creative director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin J. Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin J., how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Well, I’m born and raised here in LA. I lived in South Central, Inglewood, NoHo and now Korea-town.
When I graduated from Locke Senior High School I started class at UCLA and was apart of NJROTC. I felt like this made me so closed off. When I left I became so much more in touch with who I am.
I’m a dancer now, creative director, artist. I’m happy.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Dancing has been my life saver. I’ve become so much more confident in myself.
I was in school for so long I seen myself aging and becoming very unhappy. Almost bitter. I was working at Starbucks and that was draining. I had no time for myself.
One day I had enough and decided I should quit and follow my heart.
My heart lead me to dance. For me it’s not about what sets me apart but what brings me closer to others. Dance has a way of uniting people with a common emotion. This is why I love it so much.
Professionally it’s a challenge. As with any artistic forms it’s survival of the fittest for the jobs. I also believe in patience so I try not to compare my journey with other dancers because you never know where it could lead you.
I want the world to know that no matter what you always have you and you can be the party, you can be the jury, you can be creator.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out Peter Ford. From the start he’s been on my team motivating me encouraging and mentoring me into being a really great person. I can’t thank him enough.
