We had the good fortune of connecting with Cam Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cam, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The people I have met and the relationships I have maintained. I have been fortunate enough to surround myself with an uber talented, creative, and supportive circle of people who want nothing more than continued success for their friends. So much of this industry is based off of recommendations so having great people to put up for jobs, and having people advocate for you, is invaluable.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My styling, and the creative direction of my work, is heavily influenced by music. Fashion and music have always existed in tandem and I don’t believe one can breathe without the other. When beginning a concept, I will immerse myself into the creative — similar to the way a method actor would prepare for their role. I will listen to music from that era, shop vintage from it, watch movies, and fully put my head into that period of time.

My styling career started in a small boutique where I had the freedom to pull from an incredible assortment of brands and curate looks for our website and social media. From there, I started putting looks on my friends and local models as a fun way to express some creativity and meet other artists. It wasn’t something I realized until years later, but that was the beginning of a scene, cultivated by us, that continues to live on for the younger kids in our city. I then honed my skills at a large fashion company based in Columbus where I held the title of Sr. Styling Supervisor. It was a great experience that took me to incredible places and provided opportunities to work alongside of the most creative people I have ever met. The most important lesson I learned is to be adaptable. Any new opportunities will ultimately lead to you being a more experienced and diverse creative.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First thing is first, and we are going to eat. Bonifacio is a small spot putting out incredible Filipino food that is a must try for anyone visiting Columbus. Paulie Gee’s for a Detroit style pizza. Woodhouse Vegan for the breakfast focaccia and a great coffee (obviously taking some sweets to go). Cobra for amazing cocktails and some late night noodles and dumplings. The best sushi in the city from Akai Hana. Last but certainly not least, of course we will be at Comune. My favorite restaurant in Columbus where you can’t spend the evening sharing small plates and knocking back natural wine.

To look the part, you have to grab a new outfit at FERA. It’s a small shop with incredible brands and some of the most rare denim brands in the world. Pop down the street to Sole Classics for a new pair of sneakers. Finish off shopping with some great vintage at Smartypants and schedule an appointment with Nicole at Found Goods.

We’ve got to hit a couple shows — whoever is playing at the Newport, Basement, or Rumba Cafe. Go to a Franklinton Friday, which happens the second Friday of the month, to see all of the galleries, vintage markets, and a couple bands play.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A good friend, and incredibly talented director, Chris Boreman. We have been working together for over 4 years and I am still constantly inspired by the way he works. He has taught me so much about my creative self and has been a mentor for me through various stages of my career.
