Meet Cameron A Mitchell | Director, Writer, and Producer at Tequila Mockingbird Productions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron A Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
There’s a lot of big things I want to do. I want to make the movies I want to make and tell the stories I want to tell, but on a bigger scale I want to help in the industry shift towards decency and inclusion. Too many people pay lip service to those things but don’t really follow through on them. I would love to reach a point in my career where I can help underrepresented artists break in to the industry with indie-level projects. I think if a studio opened up that was focusing on low budget films for emerging filmmakers, everyone would get something out of it. These are the stories that resonate with people, but because they’re not going to earn a billion dollars, they often just don’t get made at all.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t recommend making two feature films at the same time with mostly the same very small team. I’m incredibly proud we pulled that off, but good lord was it a journey. I’m very excited to put these movies out in the world and show people what we’ve spent this now pretty big chunk of our lives on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love showing people around and giving them the tourist experience. My first stop is always a little Japanese fusion place on Wilshire called Yuko Kitchen. Love love love love Yuko Kitchen.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Dawn Bowie, Kelli Siefke, and John Campeau made these two films possible, so they deserve a shoutout here for sure. Andrew Menjivar and Thresa Richardson are my partners at Tequila Mockingbird, and we’re so lucky to have the team we have. We’ve been at this for a long time, and over the years we’ve put together a recurring group of folks in front of and behind the camera that kill it every single time. We’re all working towards the next thing, the bigger thing, together, and I really do believe that when one of us succeeds we all do. We wouldn’t be where we are without the four leads of This Sucks – April Denise Scott, Michael Hooper, Emily Fletcher, and Eric Flores – or without Tony Pearson. We wouldn’t be here without the people who show up on all our sets – Jazmin Ortiz on sound, Sadie Mars doing makeup, Melissa Enright and Ali Raza producing. There are so many people we owe our success to, and I can’t even begin to list them all here. Just go watch This Sucks and Driven when they come out and don’t skip the credits! Every name in there deserves the recognition.
