We had the good fortune of connecting with cameron calderon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi cameron, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I think showing your children that your passion can be your occupation is very important. It really gives them an “I can be anything I want” attitude, To see that happening every day at home is a huge confidence booster for them.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Every canvas I paint is from my day to day life. Each of them has a story or narrative from myself, even the commissioned pieces. I want my art to tell a story, not just something dreamy or pretty to hang on the wall. Making art wasn’t always my occupation, it was an escape from my 9 to 5. Taking the leap to make it my career was a huge risk of it no longer being that escape. Without the support of my family and the desire to share what I have with the world, it would not have happened. It’s always changing too, the benefit of my style is that I have adapted my perspective to travel anywhere. It allows me endless inspiration for creating something new each time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Baja California and the Sea of Cortez have a special hold on me. It is so close to Los Angeles and so desolate at the same time. I love to just throw some fishing gear in the truck, and just drive out to where the desert meets the sea. It’s about the contrast life really, the contrast of Baja is unparalleled. The color of the land and the people is a total dream in reality. Traveling around Baja is a life-changing experience for those who are willing to step off the train and would like to share that feeling with everyone. So much of my work is Baja related.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Jeff Davis, the first photographer I ever worked with. He gave me full access to his archives, without questioning my intentions, full trust.
