We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, why did you pursue a creative career?
Ever since I was a very small boy, I have known that I was going to be a composer. In that respect, I never looked at my career path as a choice, but more as a calling. Music to me is as essential as water or oxygen. Every day I wake up, I look forward to the boundless potential for musical expression. Whether I’m writing, listening, or studying, I am always surrounded by music. I honestly can’t think of a more gratifying, yet never-ending endeavor to which a person can commit their life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While I earn my living writing music for film and television, I enjoy the luxury of being able to wear many different musical hats. I write concert music, arrangements, and have served as both an orchestrator and conductor! I have studied the craft of composition since I was much younger, and to that point, I think that my youth has been a distinguishing factor for me thus far. I just turned 20 in August, and have been an active member of this business since I was 16. In those few years, I have grown a lot, and been fortunate enough to work with a lot of great people. It certainly has not always been easy, but I am motivated by the idea that anything worth having is worth working for. One of the biggest lessons that I have learned and am continuing to learn has to do with the power of building relationships. It is important to be good at what you do, but in a field so centered around collaboration, it is equally if not more important to build solid relationships. My goal is to always be learning and improving, both as a composer and as a person. The thought of how much knowledge and experience there is to gain, I must admit, is terribly exciting!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am all about having a good time, especially when I am playing host. We’d kick things off with breakfast at All Time on Hillhurst. I’d recommend we go to a few of the trademark LA spots – the Academy Museum, the Griffith Observatory, etc. One of my favorite places to have fun is actually TopGolf! Even for those who don’t play recreational golf, it doesn’t matter. You get great food, and even better vibes. For lunch, we can’t really go wrong. Whatever we’re feeling, whether it’s tacos, burgers, pizza, or if we’re trying to be a little healthier, LA is replete with amazing options for all occasions. Since the weather is usually incredibly (albeit hot!), we’d definitely get our fair share of sun. An ideal evening involves a Hollywood Bowl or Walt Disney Concert Hall concert! There is nothing quite like enjoying one of the best orchestras in the world at a historic venue.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d first like to acknowledge my family – from my mother, father, and older sibling to all of my extended family. They have been in my corner since the very beginning, and it means more to me than they could ever know. I love each and every one of them dearly, and would not trade them for anything or anyone in the world!

I’d also like to extend a special shoutout to Michael Levine and Mirette Seireg. When I was 15, I was accepted to a film scoring workshop at New York University, a program where Michael serves as guest faculty. After one of our many group feedback sessions (a process in which the faculty watch/listen and give notes to participant compositions), I approached him about the possibility of learning more about the industry from him in a more intensive setting. He very kindly invited me out to LA and agreed to take me on as a mentee In the process, I was introduced to his lovely wife Mirette, the founder and president of the wildly successful production music library “MPATH”. They both took it upon themselves to show me the ropes here in Los Angeles, introducing me to many prominent composers and executives, many of whom I am still in close contact with today. They took a chance on me, and I have never forgotten their generosity. I want them both to know how much I love and appreciate them!
