We had the good fortune of connecting with Can Canel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Can, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Planning the day well and successful time management is very important. I try to use the time effectively. Being able to work under pressure is a big part of my work. A typical day for me could be, 10 hours of nonstop work in the studio, then going hiking or for a golf tour with friends, and always aiming not to end a single day without learning something new!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe as a composer the most important thing is to find your own sound that can make you unique and recognizable. This is what makes you special. This is something that needs to be obvious or even kind of characteristic (like your signature) when people hear your music. On the other hand, this is all about story telling. I have learned how to read a scene and figure out what music to write for that specific scene. And often more importantly, to get a sense of what the filmmaker would want to achieve with that scene.
My job requires a lot of patience. I’m determined when it comes to deal with pressure. This personal characteristic of mine makes it easier for me to deal with the “time pressure”. The most important thing I’ve learned along the way is that I have to go my own way without being influenced by anyone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Assuming that everything returned to normal after covid and many places were reopened, I would definitely take my friend to a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. It would be a great experience to watch LA Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel in this marvelous place, which is one of the best and most specially designed concert halls in the world. Another activity would be hiking in Runyon Canyon Park. Walking up the hill in this park and watching L.A. from the top, I think it would be even better than what you’d see at Griffith Observatory itself.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In order for a person to be truly successful, it is very important to have people who always support and believe in them… My family has always been very supportive of me; always encouraging me to achieve “more” in this regard. I couldn’t have done this without their support. I come from a generation who had the chance to watch some of the iconic movie series in film history, such as The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and The Matrix at the movie theaters. Since there were no online movie streaming platforms like Netflix in my childhood, I used to collect CDs of these movies at home and watch them over and over again. Sometimes I only watched the movies to listen to their music. So we can say my house and my childhood were surrounded by supportive, creative, and artful family members who helped me to boost my creativity almost all the time!
