We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Hanna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candace, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk is an essential part of life. Without risk there are no great stories, great memories, or great successes. I also believe that risk must be calculated to the best of your ability, but it isn’t really a risk if everything is completely mapped out. I’ve taken a few risks in my life. The first being leaving California for New York City. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but had always wanted to live in New York, so I got a job, and moved across the country when I only knew 1 person in New York. I can say, without a doubt, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I learned so much, LOVED the city, and made some lifelong friends. The other risk that’s deeply impacted my life was leaving corporate fashion to start my own business. This risk has proven much more difficult, but no less worth it. Taking risks has allowed me to pursue my dreams, but beyond that (and I think more importantly) taking risks has allowed me to not live in regret. To me, there is nothing worse than wondering “what if” and now, I don’t have to.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a personal stylist and speaker. What sets me apart is my approach. I love working with everyday women and I have no interest in the celebrity/designer world for a number of reasons. The main reason being that I believe that style is for EVERYONE. Not just the wealthy, not just the thin, not just the “beautiful”. While fashion can be really intimidating and is dictated by the times and the world, personal style is dictated by each individual person. It’s important that my clients understand that they have personal style and that we’re just looking to unlock it and enhance it. It’s also important to me that my clients get a style education. I have 2 main goals for all my clients; the first is that my clients understand the basic principles of style, and feel empowered to put themselves together in a way that speaks to who they are and the messages they want to communicate to the world. The other goal is for my clients to feel confident in their clothes, to look their best in an effort to feel their best, and ultimately be their best.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, we would definitely hit the The Garden at Huntington Library, Griffith Observatory, the LACMA, and they’d definitely have to see Venice Beach. I’d take them to 3rd St. Promenade in Santa Monica, as well as a show at the Hollywood Bowl and a Laker game for sure! I’d take them to In n out, Pink’s for quick meals and make sure they try Animal, and Lawrys. I love to walk around and people watch, so anywhere that is happening, I am there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes! My family has been incredibly supportive. I know this isn’t always the case with many entrepreneurs and I’m grateful for my family. If they didn’t believe in me in me the way that they did, I don’t know that I would have either.
