Meet Carlos Sanchez | Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlos, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Understanding that self awareness is by far the most important quality we as creatives should have and constantly grow. From keeping oneself accountable when it comes to how much work we are currently putting into out dreams and goals, to acknowledging the quality of work we are putting out into the world. This relates to creating relationships with people in our industry as well and how we fit into certain situations and projects.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This has been a 8 year journey so far, where I had to sacrifice any and every personal gain when it came to buying myself a car, a trip to Europe, video games, etc…To buy film equipment and take time for projects that I wasn’t even getting paid for. All of that to keep moving into the right direction. Resiliency is every creatives best friend, understanding that sometimes it isn’t about how we are feeling a certain day about if we want to do it, we need to do it.
Being a first generation Mexican/American all I want is for kids that look like me, talk like me and have the same background as me. To see me and tell themselves if I can make a living from my dreams, they can too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I moved to LA less than a year ago and have spent more of my days working and working…But when I get a day off I enjoy hanging out all over the city, from eating at Bottega Louie, to watching a movie at El Capitan.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Sandy Huffaker has been by far the best mentor I could’ve of asked for when I first started as a photographer down in San Diego, California. He’s a freelance photographer based out of Southern California that covers pretty much anything that can be photograph. From the beginning he treated me with respect, took me to as many shoots as he could and gave me the best school one could get. He also injected the love to keeping an open mind and understand that art is an ongoing lesson, that no matter how many shoots you done, there’s always more to learn and to improve upon. I don’t think I would be where I’m at now without his knowledge and guidance.
