We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Vargas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Mexico City, Mexico, but have lived the majority of my life in Los Angeles. My father was a music aficionado. I remember growing up listening to the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and other great artists from that time because of my dad. In my house, you could always find a musical instrument. I would see how passionate my dad was with music and that drew me to also seek music. When I was six I began to take piano classes, but I wanted to be a drummer. However, we did not have a drum set at home so I began to play the instrument we did have, the guitar, and I loved it. Ever since then I focused the majority of my free time playing the guitar and improving my skills.

When I was thirteen I began to go to church and I saw the worship team play live and when I saw them I realized that I also wanted to play for a live audience. At church, I started to meet musicians and began to get noticed due to my guitar skills. From age thirteen on I began to be sought out to play with different bands. Most importantly, however, my dad’s influence certainly played a significant role in the development of my passion for music and overall impact on the person I am today both professionally and intimately.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art for me is a form of personal expression and the way I personally express myself is through playing guitar and producing music for others. When it comes to producing music for other artists I am very detailed oriented. I like to completely immerse myself in the piece I am working on and making the vision of the artist come alive. Whether it is orchestrating or arranging the sounds this gives me the opportunity to be involved in every step of the process which assures me we are only producing top-tier music.

I got to where I am today by being persistent, determined, and patient. True success is not always easy, it certainly was not for me. I began my music studio when I was 23 and looking back those were some of the most challenging years for me. However, it was during those years that I learned that from every obstacle I was learning a new lesson. Even my failures have been wins because I have learned from those failures. With regards, to overcoming challenges, one does not have control of the circumstances, but what you do have control over is the attitude and mindset that you take on when those challenges arise. I am the type of person that likes to be positive even in the roughest situations because I can have control over my mindset. One of the most important lessons that I have learned is that it does not matter the circumstance you should always be respectful, kind, and honest.

I would want the world to know that aside from professional successes I am a person that impacted others in a positive way. I would want people to know that regardless of the challenges that you have to be persistent about your goals, intentional, and driven if you want those dreams to become your reality.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In my opinion, the most exciting and interesting thing to do is spend quality time with the people you consider to be your close friend group. For me, one of the most important aspects of friendships is the community you build with your friends and the people around you. The first place I would take my best friend in Whittier to eat would have to be Bizarra Capital, one of the best Mexican food places, Mario’s Place, and Palermos Pizzeria. The best places to drink in Whittier for me would be Kalaveras and Steve’s Barbeque. Some of the places I would take my best friend to visit would Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Hollywood.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are certainly two people who have always provided love and encouragement in all aspects of my life and specifically in my music endeavors they are my mom and dad. My dad provided the inspiration for music and my mom provided the encouragement to pursue my dream of being a musician. Both of my parents always reminded me that to be successful one had to give 110%. My mentality has always been that persistence and determination are the two main factors that would allow for my dreams to come to fruition, both factors that my parents ingrained in me. My music journey is largely due to the unquestionable support and love from my parents.
