We had the good fortune of connecting with Carly Chan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks has been a crucial aspect of my journey as a photographer and videographer, allowing me to grow both professionally and creatively. By pushing boundaries and embracing uncertainty, I’ve been able to achieve significant milestones and discover new opportunities in my career. One of the primary ways risk has positively impacted my career is through innovation and experimentation. Early on, I realized that playing it safe would limit my growth and creativity. So, I made a conscious decision to step out of my comfort zone and explore unconventional techniques, unique angles, and different genres of photography and videography. These risks opened up new avenues for me, allowing me to develop a distinct style and stand out in a competitive industry. There have been instances where I’ve had to make quick decisions, such as accepting last-minute assignments or capturing spontaneous events. These decisions were not without their share of uncertainty, but they often led to some of my most rewarding and memorable work. Embracing these risks has helped me build a reputation for reliability and readiness to capture unique moments, which in turn has generated referrals and opened doors to exciting opportunities.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The career path I chose was all about cameras. Videography and photography have become my ultimate career passion due to their limitless opportunities. Through the lens of a camera, I am able to bring stories to life in a dynamic and captivating way. From crafting compelling narratives to capturing the essence of a moment, videography allows me to explore the realms of visual storytelling, motion, and sound.
I started my own photography business in high school. Trying to get any experience I could and make enough money to buy a camera that wasn’t from my Dad’s closet. The obsession only grew and once college came around; the only major I could see myself in was either photography or film. I am currently a film student in Los Angeles; bringing ideas to life. Moving from the Midwest to LA has taught me many things. However, the one main idea that roams through my head is to remember and use the people around me (in a positive creative aspect). We all have many gifts and talents. However, the beauty of it all is when we come together and collaborate to make something even better.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Currently, I am based between LA County and OC County. I would show them the best of both worlds. Starting off up North going to the Getty Museum, Hollywood Hike, Griffith Observatory, Beverly Hills, and the grove. Ending the week down South with surfing in Laguna, visiting Orange, Fashion Island, and all of the local thrifts in the area.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout all of the creatives. In a world that often emphasizes traditional academic pursuits, it’s essential to acknowledge the incredible contributions and unique perspectives that creative students bring to the table. Whether you express your creativity through art, music, writing, design, or any other medium, your imagination and innovation are invaluable.
You are the ones who paint vibrant colors on the canvas of our lives, compose melodies that touch our souls, craft stories that transport us to new realms, and design spaces that inspire and uplift. Your creativity breathes life into our existence and pushes the boundaries of what is possible.
Despite the challenges and doubts that may arise along the way, please remember that your creativity is a gift. Embrace it, nurture it, and let it guide you on your journey. Your passion has the power to change lives, ignite emotions, and spark conversations.
