We had the good fortune of connecting with carmen aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi carmen, why did you pursue a creative career?
One of the most compelling aspects of my chosen path is the privilege of capturing people in moments of raw authenticity. Whether in portraiture, candid photography, or documentary work, the process of photographing individuals allows me to witness the beauty of human vulnerability. It is a profound experience to have someone sit before me, allowing me to look through my lens and represent them in a way that transcends the superficial.
The camera becomes a tool of connection, enabling me to forge a bond with my subjects. In those moments, they open themselves up to me, revealing their innermost thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities. I am tasked with the responsibility of translating these intimate revelations into visual stories that resonate with others. This process is as much about empathy and understanding as it is about technical skill.
I truly enjoy the connection I developed with the person sitting in front of me, sometimes they think is just a photo but after ams chit chat and really listening to their words and body movement I get to captured more than just a photo, Im always an awe of their reaction when them see themselves through my eyes.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photography has always fascinated me, but it wasn’t until I picked up a camera and started experimenting with portraits that I discovered my true calling. The ability to freeze a moment, to capture the essence and emotions of a person, fascinated and inspired me. I began taking on a few paying jobs, seizing every opportunity to refine my skills and develop my unique style.
As I honed my craft, I decided to challenge myself further by entering competitions. To my surprise and delight, my work was not only published but also received recognition through three prestigious awards. This validation ignited a flame within me, boosting my confidence and giving me the courage to pursue photography as a business.
Starting a business, especially as an immigrant, presented its fair share of challenges. Navigating the bureaucratic maze to obtain the necessary permits and licenses required perseverance and determination. I was determined not to let any obstacle deter me from my dream. I immersed myself in research, sought guidance from experienced colleagues, and attended workshops to continually
improve the quality of my work. Photographing the lives and dreams of the women I encounter is a true honor. Every session allows me to connect with my clients on a deep level, understanding their desires and capturing their essence. The trust they place in me to portray their authentic selves is a responsibility I cherish. It is this
connection that drives me to continually grow, improve, and exceed expectations.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A museum is a must, I would take them to Getty, LACMA and the Griffith Observatory, to eat I always google or yelp the hottest places, small business and trendy ones, walking in the streets of L.A is an adventure any where is a good place.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Caspitrano Sudsery, small business that creates organic soaps, with the best natural products available.
