Meet Caterina Nix | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caterina Nix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caterina, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Chile, and building a career in music here is very hard. The whole system is focused on making individuals who bring money into the equation. So, the “ideal” here is to go to college and get a degree on a “traditional” occupation. There’s not a lot of room or support for artistic careers, and culturally, arts are generally conceived as an accessory to society, not as something necessary. So, I got a law degree, because in my parent mind, that was going to give me better opportunities, but I always wanted to be a singer, and I promised myself that I would never abandon my truth. I make music mostly because it’s a need, and I push hard for a space, because I believe in what I do. So, in the end, the impact of my upbringing was that even if I was forced to be part of the brick wall, I wasn’t going to let myself down by abandoning my dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Making music has been a tool, an escape, a dream, a challenge…and so much more. I can’t imagine life without it, because I wouldn’t know who I am. Most of my friends who also played instruments as teenagers dropped that part of who they were, and they ALL regret it. But I kept going, I still do. Pursuing a golden unicorn, I might never really trap. But what I want is to enjoy the process, the experience, the chances, the dangers of the journey. That’s how I got here, and I feel there’s a long way filled with adventure and success that will be coming my way. Because I play to win, and if I don’t, at least I’ll know I tried my best and will have no regrets. I’ve learned so many lessons, so many skills that I have applied to other aspects of my life. Resilience, perseverance, optimizing resources, etc.
I’d like the world to dive just beneath the surface of our music, and to see that they can relate to our message, to our experiences. I’d like to reach more people who can accompany us in the journey.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chile is an amazing country. From desert to mountains to beaches and forests. If I could fantasize about taking a friend to a few places here, I’d go to the Valley of the Moon in the Chilean desert, and Torres del Paine in the south. Both very different destinations that are majestic and overwhelmingly beautiful. As for Santiago, I’d take them some amazing traditional restaurants, and we’d probably hit a karaoke bar…. late at night. Santiago has many historical jewels which I really love downtown, so that would also be a must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think Timo Tolkki deserves at least to be mentioned, because he opened the door for me to enter a more relevant part of the industry.
Nasson is also a very important person in my career. He’s been an incredible partner and always has my back when it comes to making music, preparing live shows, analyzing the market, looking for opportunities etc.
