We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Glasgow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catherine, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
When deciding whether to keep going or to give up, I often imagine myself two different ways: as a child and as an old woman. When imagining myself as a child, I think back on all the huge dreams I had without the weight of “reality” to drag me down. I was so full of hope and so sure of myself that I would make all my dreams come true. I try to channel that energy to keep me going when I feel doubts creeping in, and do what I can do to make my younger self’s dreams come true. And when imagining myself as an old woman, I wonder when I’m looking back on my life, what will I regret not doing because at the time it felt too hard or too scary. Because life is full of things that feel hard and feel scary, and whether or not we push through is the deciding factor. If you have big dreams and goals, playing it safe and staying within your comfort zone is the number 1 way to never make it there. Being outside your comfort zone is hard, but so is living a life wondering what you could have done if only you’d really gone for it. So go for it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer, songwriter, and music artist. I decided at age 22 to abandon my plans of getting a “real job” after college and to instead move to LA to pursue my lifelong passions of music and the arts. I moved here on a whim, alone, no job, no money, no set place to live, knowing only a handful of people. After 2 months being here, I got a job bussing tables at a celebrity hotspot restaurant, and I lived in the living room of 2 girls I met and slept on an air mattress for the entire first year I was here. Since being in LA, I’ve done what I can to check off every box of all the things I’ve ever wanted to try- the professional singing world, songwriting, leading a band, being a solo artist, dancing, acting, musical theater, etc. just trying to find myself and my path. Of all the things I’ve tried, I just keep coming back to songwriting and performing as an artist. It has not been easy, it still is not easy every day and I’m still finding myself. But I know that I have to give it everything I’ve got because I’ve had these dreams since I was a child and they’ve never gone away, and I know they never will. My relationship with God has been a huge factor in my story and how I’ve even made it this far, because I’ve wanted to give up more times than I can count. But learning to push through the discomfort, learning to be okay with people making fun of me or thinking, “who does she think she is?” have all been key in me continuing this journey. If I keep going all these things can happen. If I give up, they’ll certainly never happen.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I LOVE the South Bay. Hermosa Beach, Redondo, Manhattan Beach. These areas remind me of the town in Florida that I’m from, New Smyrna Beach, but they still have that LA feel to them. So these areas feel like a blend of both of my homes. I would take friends down there to explore, I would take them around Toluca Lake which is where I first lived when I moved here and I love it. We’d go eat at Kabosu in Toluca Lake. One day we could go take a hike in Malibu and go to El Matador. I’d also take them to Venice Boardwalk and we’d see all the performers, skateboarders, artists along that walk. Then we’d go get Oysters (my favorite food) from Water Grill in Santa Monica or King’s Fish House in Calabasas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my parents for instilling confidence in me with the way they raised me- speaking life into me, showing me the world from a young age, proving to me you don’t have to follow the crowd and you can and should follow your dreams even if people think you’re crazy.

And the friends who consistently show up to support and encourage me, who say that what I’m doing inspires them because that, in turn, inspires me to keep going.
