We had the good fortune of connecting with Ceilne Lam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ceilne, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
y decision to leave home and pursue an education in the United States has been one of the most significant and transformative choices contributing to my growth as an artist. Experiencing two drastically different cultures has been invaluable to my learning journey. The juxtaposition of these cultures has opened up endless possibilities, resulting in artwork that is not only unique but also deeply resonates with my heart. The opportunity to learn from diverse perspectives and understand how history has shaped the contemporary world has been integral to my artistic development.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
To understand the world is to understand the self. I find countless parallels between my life, surroundings, and the larger universe. My practice explores the relationship between physiological and psychological suppression. Physical confinement and angst To understand the world is to understand the self. I find countless parallels between my life, surroundings, and the larger universe. My practice explores the relationship between physiological and psychological suppression. Physical confinement and angst often result from historical and systematic oppression, causing immobility through censorship and unsolicited force. My art serves as an apparatus for creating critical conversations, disturbing consciences, and documenting emotions.
My experience with cultural and political differences informed my artistic vocabulary in my upbringing. I talk about incidents and emotions evoked by protests, tragedies, events during revolutions, and oppressive living conditions under systemic bias. Feelings of trust, hope, and fatigue stem from personal experiences connecting to larger contexts. Physical and psychological oppressions also appear in the digitally dominated society—the increase of media and information mobility causes an increase in physical immobility and passive media consumption. I seek balance in an unbalanced world. Through my art, I acknowledge the unbalanceness through point of views, and abstract images.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Griffith Observatory at night! Nothing beats the views there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The freedom to pursue a career in art that I enjoy today is a testament to the unwavering support of my family. Born into an ordinary family, neither of my parents pursued art professionally, yet they have always wholeheartedly encouraged my passion since my early childhood. Despite facing financial constraints, they spared no effort in supporting my artistic education.
My father, in particular, instilled in me the importance of creativity and critical thinking, principles that continue to shape my artistic practice. He taught me the value of adaptability, independent thought, and the strategic application of my skills in real-world contexts.
Navigating the path of an artist is fraught with challenges, but the emotional support from those around me has been invaluable during times of difficulty. Their encouragement has been a cornerstone, lifting me up and fueling my determination to persevere in pursuing my artistic dreams.
