We had the good fortune of connecting with Celeste Bronfman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Celeste, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say it’s my passion for storytelling. The Film and TV industry is a notoriously tough business, and to make it, you really need to dedicate yourself to your craft and understand that as a freelancer, you’ll always be on the lookout for your next opportunity. It’s hard, but when you care so much about the stories you’re telling and what you want to put out into the world, it gives you the strength to overcome all the hurdles. I think my intense passion for writing TV has always been my superpower – it’s propelled me forward and helped me take huge risks in my career that have led to all the successes I’ve had.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started off my career in Canada, working as a TV writer for series like Degrassi: Next Class and Big Top Academy. I really loved working on these shows, but I grew up loving science fiction television and always had this dream of working on superhero shows for Marvel or DC. So when I moved to LA, I immediately started meeting everyone I possibly could who was connected to either company. I asked them to get coffee and questioned them about how Marvel and DC’s Writer’s Rooms were set up, and how the development and production process worked for their shows. It took a bit of time, but after making enough connections, I landed an interview for a show at Marvel Studios called Marvel Zombies, and I was lucky enough to be hired to work in the writer’s room. While on Marvel Zombies, I had the opportunity to pitch and write alongside our head writer Zeb Wells and it was a dream come true! I also just wrote another six episode web series for Marvel HQ that I can’t wait for people to check out.
Laying it all out like this, it might seem like my journey was relatively simple, but there were of course many challenges along the way. I’ve had opportunities fall apart because a show wasn’t renewed, or because the writer’s rooms couldn’t budget for another writer. There’s no way to control any of that, but what you can control is your own writing. So I work on my scripts every day and am always ready for that next opportunity when it comes.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a big fan of the East side of LA, so I’d definitely begin there. I love walking around the Silver Lake reservoir. It’s very peaceful in the mornings. After that, I love grabbing brunch at one of the many great restaurants nearby. Bacari on Sunset Boulevard is wonderful – I highly recommend trying their Egg pizza. I also love The Alcove in Los Feliz. It has a really nice balcony and great coffee! From there, you can walk to Skylight Books – a bookstore with tons of wonderful events. And as for day trips outside of LA, I love the San Diego Zoo and the Long Beach aquarium! There is truly so much to do in and around LA.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to give a shout-out to Merigan Mulhern, who is an incredible writer and one of the first people I met in LA. She introduced me to a community of writers who have been integral to my journey here. It’s so important to have community when you’re a creative – you need people who are going to give you advice about navigating the industry, introduce you to producers and other writers, and give you notes on scripts. Merigan has been there to help me every step of the way, and I’m very grateful to have met her.
