We had the good fortune of connecting with Cesar Valderrama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cesar, what makes you happy? Why?
Wow, this is a very deep question. Well, honestly sharing my experiences with the people I love and care about is what makes me happy. Without them, I don’t think I could have the motivation to continue on with my creativity. I love acting because it has always been a great tool for me to express myself, and in a way to connect with people through my emotions. When I invite my friends and family to a production that I am in, or webseries that’s online, or a film that I am creating, it’s that reaction when I see them glow up being surprised at my talent, that makes everything whole. It was a moment that we shared that will forever be engraved in their heads which is something that I’m sure we’ll treasure forever. This goes for traveling as well. When I explain to them new locations and cultures that I discovered in countries that I never thought in a million years that I would be so gracious to encounter, it inspires them to also learn and to try to understand the world that’s out there. I love trying new things that I’m not normally comfortable doing, because by doing that I learn really what I am capable of and overcoming fears. But being able to share both verbally and literally the experience that is happening, is something that could never be replaced and forever be a reminder of why I live.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ever since I was a little boy, I have always loved the arts. I loved expressing myself because I always felt like an outsider from school, and I felt through performances that I was truly able to have myself heard and recognized as the person who I am. It helped me with my confidence; to find my find my voice and make myself heard not just verbally, but with my presence as well. I learned how to radiate a positive energy that people want to gravitate towards so they can bounce back their creative energy towards me as well. Most importantly I learned that by creating my own stories and opportunities, that I am also opening the door for many other minority creative souls out there who were looking for a platform as well to share their talents. There aren’t many Latino visionaries out there, and I am very proud to say that I am one of the few who recognized this and wants to expose to the world our voices and stories by creating scripts that is heavily based on people of color. I am an openly fluid man, who constantly tries to find films that properly represent me in the limelight but in a positive way, and I have to say that there is hardly any, if any at all out there. And if there are, they ‘re usually shown in a negative or prejudicial way. I represent the voice for the many who are not heard, who when I look to cast for my film and want to work with, I will always put any minority group out there to the top of the hiring list before those who are fortunate. I am very proud to say that my latest film is an entirely diverse cast with many people of color, lgbtq+ representation, and even the disabled representation. I will continue to fight to share our experiences with the world and I believe it is my purpose to help inspire others to do so as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends was visiting the area, one of the first places I would take them is definitely to my job. I am a bartender, and honestly it feels like home every time I go there. There are so many regulars that go there, so of course everyone knows each other. We share stories about our life and family, but most importantly it’s a safe space to share your concerns and be heard without judgement because who doesn’t go to a bar regularly without having some issues to share. Every time I invite someone there, they love hearing the stories told by the regulars who have years of experiences going to a bar that helped create amazing memories for them, who then pass that memory now on to my friends. Also, who doesn’t love going to a gay club or bar with amazing music. New York has a ton of gay bars and clubs that are fun to go for dancing, interacting with my other visitors from around the world, and even seeing shows or performances being done. But most importantly what makes New York, New York, is Central Park. You are surrounded by technology, skyscrapers, the loud cars honking, crowds of people running, yet in the middle of Manhattan there is a little peace and tranquility to distract you from all the craziness that is going on behind you. Art is being performed, romance is being shared, nature’s fresh air is circulating through your entire body, all happening in this one location that everyone feels safe to be themselves.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Well as I mentioned earlier, without the support and tremendous love that I have from my friends and family, I would not be the man who I am today, so a lot of gratitude goes to them. My mom, my dad, and my brother have been such huge supporters by accepting my career choice, attending to all my shows, and pushing me to continue with my head high, that even with all those rejections, that if opportunity doesn’t come knocking on my door, then I create my own opportunities. As well as for my friends, without their constructive criticism and different outlook, I wouldn’t have grown. But most importantly, I definitely owe it to my mentor from high school Mr. Buresch for taking a chance on me, seeing something special in me that many other schools didn’t see to help this bud blossom into a dedicated, hardworking actor with a purpose.
