We had the good fortune of connecting with Chandler Tang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chandler, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are a few things. The most important factors behind our success: being able to share our story with our community and our perseverance, especially through the pandemic. We opened November 2019, mere months before the pandemic lockdown.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I studied Art History in college where the path is not clear. It was very difficult for a while. I got a lot of flak – “What are you going to do with that Major?” I jumped around a lot of different careers: corporate retail (fashion and beauty) and various start-ups. After rough days at my last corporate job, I started to work on a dream project late a night: a shop of my own, in my very hometown. It was an “ah-ha” moment: as if my higher self knew all along, just not yet fully realized.
I can not find the right words to capture this great epiphany of mine. It honestly scared me at first, to finally say out loud something that’s been in my heart this whole time: I want to run a local shop. I ventured to create a place of inspiration, a place to explore and promote creativity, and ultimately a respite from online shopping. To create a point of difference in SF retail and fulfill the need for more gift shops. It was also important for me to share a place of colorful design with the community.
I come from a family of small business owners. They were true entrepreneurs. Through the years, my family collectively ran many different businesses in the Bay: a laundry service, laundromat, bookstore, jewelry store, restaurant, bar, dry cleaner, grocery store, and more all in/around SF.
I am only now realizing that running a small business is in my blood. I am honored to carry on the tradition to serve the community.
I’ve worked in fashion, furniture, beauty, art, and design. I can truthfully attest that all of my past jobs led me to today and taught me a collection of diverse skills that I apply at post.script. (curation, buying, ops, customer service, design, etc.).
Despite struggles along the way, I can now look at my path with a sense of pride and wonder.
One important lesson I’d learn is everyone’s path is different and that’s ok!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question! San Francisco continues to change! Some current favorite spots: Philz Coffee, Dumpling Home or Dumpling Time, Del Popolo pizza, and Green Apple Books. The view of the GG bridge by Marina Green. So many great spots. I love the Fillmore neighborhood (of course), Hayes Valley, Dogpatch, and the Mission.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Huge shoutout to our neighbors (near and far) for supporting us through the pandemic and beyond! Those visits, smiles, and online orders go a long way.
