We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanelle Nou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chanelle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
After moving to California, I jumped into a full time position where I dedicated 6 years of my time, energy, and resources to grow within that company as well as in a career in operations and project management. I prioritized my job and financial gain over personal opportunities for growth and life experiences. What being an adult has taught me was to chase that dollar. Eventually I questioned myself, “but at the expense of what?” It was personally exhausting having to weigh the pros and cons of money versus quality of life at the time. Although I had learned many valuable lessons within that position, I did not know how to value and prioritize my personal life. Now, a few years later, I had left that job to pursue my degree in business as well as venture into creative careers where I can delegate my time and energy into creating products that are more meaningful to me. I am able to utilize my background in operations and project management to keep my workflow steady while avoiding burnout. Work Life balance in your life is a fun mixture of stress and self satisfaction. It is still a constant struggle to attain work life balance, but if you value your job over your happiness and mental health then you will never truly achieve that balance.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Little Crayvings specializes in personal name crayons, creative learning tools, and fun party favors for kids! Art and learning go hand in hand and sensory learning for children nurtures their creativity. Initially, creating the name crayons as gifts and keepsakes was a fun hobby that I was only offering to family and friends and I loved hearing and seeing the reactions from their kids. I finally decided to debut my Etsy shop in January 2021 and I have been overwhelmed by the positive feedback from my customers! The initial creation of my business was simple, straightforward and fun and attracting an online customer base through social campaigns was a great learning curve. The hardest part is attracting a local customer base. I am currently working on offering my products at local farmers markets and creating a dedicated website to take order requests through Instagram and Facebook for in person pickups.

What I have learned from starting this business was that it is very easy to compare yourself to other similar businesses that are trending instead of my own, however I am very grateful for the advice and support from my own community to keep pressing on. I have also learned that it is fun to strategize and innovate new sales campaigns for holidays and personal party events.
What I want to continue to promote with my brand and business is that learning and gifting can be fun and personalized. With the increase of at home learning and stay at home parenting, keeping kids stimulated and nurturing their creativity outside of an Ipad or phone screen can be difficult. What I hope to provide with my products is a bit of fun away from the screens and some good old fashioned coloring!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were to host my best friend for a week long trip in SoCal, I would start with taking them to get a quick bite at LB Exchange where we would have our choice of acai bowls from Blue Bowl or some fun banh mi and boba drinks from Bite Mi Asian Kitchen. The following two days would be spent at Disneyland in Anaheim. One day at each park experiencing all the fun rides and equally fun sweet treats. Our absolute favorite is getting the brownie ice cream sundaes from Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory. Throughout the rest of the trip we would visit various restaurants I frequent including Rice String Noodle Shack, Flying Chicken Padak, and Sunrise Café Lakewood. Sometime during their stay we would wake up super early and venture to Newport Beach and watch the sunrise while eating some croissant sandwiches from Seaside Bakery and then stay up late and wait in a long line for M&M donuts for their infamous blueberry donuts. The day before their last day I would treat them to a whole day at the Korean spa in Westlake where we would enjoy the saunas, lounging, and eating snacks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out and recognize my family. Without their constant support, love, and encouragement I wouldn’t be able to push towards my goals and succeed!

A few honorable mentions below –
I’d like to start by thanking my life partner, Farley. He has not only been supportive of me and my business ventures but also continues to motivate me to do more. He is resilient, strong minded, multifaceted, and kind. I love him very much and I am looking forward to reaching our goals together. Secondly, I would like to thank my business babe, Kimmy. She is truly inspiring and has helped me elevate not only my work ethic but my aspirations. She is intelligent, resourceful, and creative. I value her highly as my friend and business partner. I absolutely cannot forget my cousin, Nalani (Ono Bakes) and my niece Kailea (Kai’s Jewelry). They are both small business owners and are thriving! Nalani is caring, strong willed, and outgoing. She has helped me bounce through ideas and is always the first to be excited for what I’m putting out. Kailea mirrors her mom as well as being so smart at her young age to want to create and manage her own business. I am so blessed and proud to witness their constant growth. Lastly, I would like to give a big heaping thank you to my best friend, Kate. Although we are a few states apart she continues to support me and motivate me on the daily! She is beautiful, motivating, and never wrong. After 10+ years of friendship I know I can count on her for anything. I love you all and thank you for believing in Little Crayvings!
