We had the good fortune of connecting with Charisse Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charisse, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want my legacy to be one that is beneficial for others. I don’t believe that the things that I achieve in this lifetime are just for me. I also don’t believe that my value or worth are tied to the things that I accomplish. I desire to love and to help others. I want to build generational wealth and resources for my family, friends, and peers. I want to be remembered as someone who was kind, wise, thoughtful, fun, creative, and lived life to the fullest.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a visual artist and painter. My main mediums are oil and watercolor, but I’ve also used acrylics, colored pencils, and alcohol inks in my work. I don’t want to limit the ways that I express my creativity, so I’m always excited to explore new mediums. I try to be my most authentic self whenever I’m creating my art and truly paint what I’m feeling. My current work is focused on the healing process after heartbreak. I’m excited to be on this journey and I’m proud of myself for not settling into a career that isn’t fulfilling for me. I had previously worked in television and had realized that it was a career that I was no longer passionate about. I took a risk and moved to Los Angeles from my small town in Maryland to pursue a career in visual art. The journey hasn’t been easy and I’ve struggled with self-doubt, but I push myself to keep going because I truly love what I do. I know that one day my persistence will pay off. I’ll always paint regardless of what monetary value is or isn’t placed on my work. I’ve learned that my journey is my journey. It’s not supposed to look like anyone else’s and I shouldn’t compare my journey to others.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d suggest eating at Blazin’ Burgers, Castaway, Nobu, Sweet Chick, Thai Vegan, Hot & Cool Cafe, and Catch LA. I’d recommend going for a hike at either Runyon Canyon or Solstice Canyon. We could also visit Zuma Beach. I’d take my friend shopping at Nappily Naturals Apothecary and Eso Won Bookstore. Hopefully we’d be able to visit the Wake Me When I’m Free museum, which is an interactive museum that honors the life of Tupac Shakur. Maybe we could buy a few donuts from Donut Friend and then get a spontaneous tattoo at Super Sweet Tattoo as a reminder of our time together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give credit to God for giving me the gift of life and creativity. I’d also like to give credit to my parents for raising me to be a kind-hearted woman with integrity. Special thanks to my family, friends, supporters, and cat for loving me and supporting my art journey.
