We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Grace and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
A friend of mine just asked me this question last night. She asked what brings me joy, what makes me happy. My response was the things that bring me joy typically do not bring me profit, haha! Of course, writing and performing are on the list. There is nothing like connecting with an audience, especially if it means making a good first impression. I have been fortunate enough to hear people in the crowd sing along to lyrics I’ve written. Talk about cloud nine feelings. That is really special.
Aside from music, I also really enjoy serving in my local community. I will jump on any opportunity to serve people experiencing homelessness or women and children who may have been victims of domestic violence. One of my favorite things to do every month is a laundry/shower ministry, where my church partners with other local churches to provide food, hygiene products, and clothing. There is a fully converted RV with showers for the guests and everything. It’s pretty amazing to participate in restoring dignity to people in our community who have fallen on hard times.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of not giving up, because Lord knows there have been plenty of times when I wanted to do so. Pursuing a creative career is not easy. We are faced with constant comparison and rejection everywhere we look. The main reason I have not given up ties into the last question about who deserves credit in my story. It’s every amazing friend and family member who has been there for me along the way. One of my buddies just sent me a message the other day reminding me of a time when he came to my house when I wasn’t doing well. Mentally and emotionally, I was in a deep depression to the point that I couldn’t get out of bed. He went on to tell me how happy he was to see what I had accomplished since moving back to California in 2018. That’s just one of so many examples of people loving me back to life, and I am eternally grateful. What I want people to know about me and my career is that it takes a village… and then some. My friend and fellow musician Tom Conlon once said he didn’t feel comfortable calling himself an independent artist because of all of the support from people who loved and cared for him. I’ve borrowed that mindset ever since.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend is a vegetarian, so luckily there are no shortage of options in Southern California. I would definitely take him to some taco trucks and food tents. Those are always a good choice. I would most likely plan a visit to Griffith Park Observatory and see if there were any concerts happening at The Greek Theater. That’s one of my favorite venues in the United States. I would also take him to the Fullerton Museum to see the Fender exhibit. He and I are both history nerds with a love for music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh jeez! How much time do we have? I would not be where I am without the love of support of so many kind people in my life. Not to be too sentimental or gushy, but I will dedicate this shoutout to my mom, Marcia Grace. She has been my biggest fan and supporter since day one. She has always been in my corner and expressed how proud she is. My mother never told me to go be a lawyer or a doctor. Heck, she cried when I cut my long hair over ten years ago. Honestly though, there is nobody like her in my story. I’ll love her forever.
