We had the good fortune of connecting with Aly Talaea and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aly, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is actually your drive: validated, valued and working for your ambition. The first risk you take in your life is the most important one. You get to taste your drive for the first time. This first risk gives you a wider and deeper perspective about life in general and your life in particular. It gives you boundaries to break, reality boundaries, your boundaries. Every other risk afterwards just materializes more and more your aspirations. The better you get with your faith leaps, the more of what you want to achieve reveals itself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an international songwriter, composer, singer and guitarist from Egypt. I write concept psychedelic rock albums projecting mainly on social phenomenas – revolutions, activism, youth in societies, generational differences. I formed my rock band in Egypt, eventually expanded our showcases to playing in Europe and then the States. Along the way I founded my rock school, media company and recently my publishing company. Was it challenging to get to this point? Yes. There is always this extra logistics challenge for any immigrant musician in terms of paperwork, settling down and all that – that’s the easier part, manageable with some grit. The harder part is that your collectiveness and focus on the creative process as an artist might suffer. That’s why I think immigrant artists have to always be working on a ‘masterpiece’ which can keep them centered and on track. I started my music journey with tuning my guitar my own way for a year. Part of it I wanted to find a way to play chords easier and the other important part, is that I wanted to mimic a train station ambience that I used to pass by everyday after my practice. After a year or so I decided I had to put my sport ambitions aside and see what music is about.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I think there is so much to see here. Parks, beaches – Malibu is a piece of paradise, live venues – when they open again. I really like Santa Monica as a city and Pasadena, lots of places to hangout and Pasadena has this European touch which I think is great. And there is always the regular stuff like Universal studios..etc
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The ‘Act of giving’ is the best mentor I have had so far. It got me where I am and still inspires me to do more.
