We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef Darrell “DAS” Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef Darrell “DAS”, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson that my business/career has taught me is that you will always have room to grow, and to surround yourself with those that inspire you.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a formally trained chef that has had amazing opportunities within the industry. I was featured on two food Network shows, The Next Food Network STAR, and The Great Food Truck Race. I’ve also had the opportunity to cook for the former first lady, Michele Obama as well as travel the world as the personal chef for Sean “Diddy” Combs.
What sets me apart is that my drive is rooted in selflessness and significance. Meaning, I see every meal I prepare as my gift offering to the people that will experience my food.
I got to where I am by becoming formally trained in the craft, and grinding my way to the goal that I set out for myself. It was definitely, not easy. and building relationships was key. I surrounded myself with other chefs that inspired me and held me accountable.
I learned that failing was part of the journey. Whenever I didn’t get the job, or my meal wasn’t up to my standards, I knew that it was an opportunity for me to sharpen my knives and keep going.
My overall brand is really a reflection of who I am and how I approach the world and that’s by giving. I always keep the person/people in mind. When I’m cooking it is more of me hoping people forget their worries with each bite and get inspired by my products.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
