We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef Jes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
“God is within me I can not fail” That stuck with me the most because for years I had negative impact over me and my future. Making my dreams seem unattainable but in reality they were closer than they appeared. I knew that if I kept my faith and used my passion to fuel my drive nothing was out of my reach.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is called JesCatering and my slogan is “It’s good JesLikeThat” meaning when you get food from me you won’t need to add anything else to enhance flavor. Every plate curated comes from the heart and is made with love. I’ve been in the culinary industry for ten years. I’ve done everything from baking, being a barista, line cook, executive chef even a dishwasher. I give the same respect to the janitor as I would to the CEO because I know what its like to work all positions.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was out here I would definitely have beach vibes. A little bar hopping at the pier, good fresh seafood down there as well and I can’t forget to get to go Jetskiing. Lastly, I LOVE TopGolf I think I’m Tiger Woods when I’m not on the grill lol. But definitely the beach is always my go to for a calm vibe with nice scenery.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I would like to give all honor and praise to my Lord and Savior, without him nothing is possible. Secondly, I want to thank my mom she’s been supporting me since I was 10 years old outside on the BBQ pit every Saturday morning. To my grandmother Wilma Lee Smith (rest in peace) I hope I’m making you proud down here and you see all the recipes I’ve used on your behalf. Lastly, I want to thank my culinary teacher, Ms. Jacobs for instilling all the fundamentals I would need to thrive in the culinary world.
