We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Reeves & Casey Connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea Reeves & Casey Connor, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Being partners, Casey and Chelsea had dreamed of co-creating together… Casey has a non-profit called Live Out Loud Foundation that is dedicated to helping kids with grief and has served on numerous boards bringing different services to children of all ages, while Chelsea holds a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy specializing in adolescents and bringing an experiential component into the growth process. Chelsea has held numerous leadership roles at treatment centers across the country and wanted to implement what she has seen to be the most effective when working with young adults through the lens of adventure and getting outside.
Mid-quarantine they jokingly shared “We were starting to go a little stir-crazy. We knew we had to get back to our roots and get outside and get active… Safety and honoring those we love during this strange time is a huge priority so we were stumped how we could travel and do all safely..” That is when Casey and Chelsea had the idea to rent a camper van, that quickly led to them purchasing their own and beginning the fleet. Casey and Chelsea wanted to give clients a taste of living on the road in nature and create a customized experience for each of them. Clients have the option of simply renting a camper van or school bus, and then they have concierge services they can add on with the adventure coaching and experiences. Casey and Chelsea’s hope is to pass on some pivotal tools they have found to be life-changing while nurturing their own mental health. We know not everyone has the space or freedom to have camper van or school bus on their own. Our goal is to offer the gift of being a road warrior to others, even if on a temporary basis!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Adventure Out Loud is a campervan and school bus rental and adventure company. We specialize in rentals, van builds, school bus builds, consulting and adventure/therapeutic coaching. Adventure Out Loud’s focus is to bring a safe, customized experience to every client. Clients can simply rent an adventure vehicle from our fleet or they can use concierge services to add adventure/therapeutic coaching and experiences. We are most proud of the individualized experience we create each client. We take pride in each experience and want to ensure each person feels safe, confident, and excited for the whole adventure. We are more than a brand that creates fun memories. We both have had our own lives moved from the power and influence of being active in nature. Our hope is to bring that same gift of being outdoors to others, even if this pushes them outside of their comfort zone!
Creating Adventure Out Loud had unique challenges along the way. We opened when COVID-19 was at the height. We lead with our hearts and take pride in creating personalized experiences. Due to safety protocols we had to get creative with how each experience could feel personalized and at ease. We both have full-time jobs so balancing this passion project we felt called to do was a stretch at times and needing simply more hours in the day! Chelsea is a therapist that works closely with families in crisis and stabilization, while Casey manages an entertainment company and performs at gigs around the world. With passion and purpose there is always time. After many hiccups with communication, collaboration, and working as a team Chelsea and Casey have a steady groove flowing at Adventure Out Loud!
Adventure Out Loud’s mission is to create an authentic space that can leave people inspired to live their truth & passion. Whether someone utilizes our services or not, we want to leave people feeling inspired and create a movement to get back to the simplicities of life and finding joyful, healing moments in the outdoors!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start on the Westside in Santa Monica and Venice Beach. Do a beach day, rent a bike and cruise on the beach, finally making your way to Abott Kinney for a little lunch and killer shopping. Make sure to checkout The Butcher’s Daughter for lunch and go get your sweet tooth craving at Wanderlust Creamery. Our favorite Aviator Nation store is on Abott Kinney too and has an epic ping pong setup if you are a feeling a bit competitive! After a gorgeous day in the sun, you are going to want to checkout SUGARFISH. There will no doubt be a long wait, but this is a LA favorite and some of the best sushi in town (make sure you get the blue crab hand roll!).
Day 2 make sure to checkout the infamous Beverly Hills and Hollywood scene. Checkout rodeo dr. and then cruise through Hollywood on the sunset strip. Make sure to check out a comedy show at The Comedy Store or The Improv. If you are feeling like live music make sure to check out the legendary Greek Theatre or Hollywood Bowl!
Day 3 lets get out of the city! Cruise up to Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara our favorite hotel is Kimpton’s Goodland. Its a bit off the scene from Santa Barbara and has a funky, retro vibe to the place! If you have a chance check out a show at The Santa Barbara Bowl. There is nothing like the acoustics there and the gorgeous background! Sama Sama is our favorite for dinner and has the most delicious and creative dishes! The waves can seem a bit intimidating but if you can get out of the break, paddle boarding or kayaking is gorgeous!
Day 4 head to Ojai and say hi to all the hippies! When you get there check out Meditation Mount and set some intentions while enjoying the beauty Ojai has to offer. Once you’ve worked up a good appetite make sure to grab brunch at The Farmer and The Cook and then head to Ojai’s famous hot springs! Ojai has lots of gorgeous hikes and you can’t go wrong!
Day 5 head back to LA for a regroup in the city. You can’t come to LA without trying to spot your favorite celebrities or TikTok stars at Runyon Canyon. Runyon has two courses- one is a bit more challenging, but doable for all! You get a gorgeous view of the city (smog and all) and an epic view of the Hollywood Sign. If you didn’t get your hiking fix at Runyon, cruise over to Griffith Park and stay to do some star gazing at The Observatory. After a full active day treat yourself to In-N-Out and Randy’s Donuts!
Day 6 Malibu! Start the day off at Malibu Farm for breakfast and walk the pier… Then head towards Zuma Beach for a relaxing beach day! End the day at The Restraunt.
Final day head south to The OC- Laguna Beach to be specific. Make sure to pick up breakfast burritos at The Orange Inn and head to Thousand Steps beach. One of the most beautiful beaches in SoCal where the majestic cliffs leave you feeling like you are on vacay outside of the states! If you plan appropriately around the tides, make sure to check out the secret pools through the caves. For dinner check out Mozambique for an increadible rooftop view and sunset, and live music!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We have both been lucky enough to have incredible mentors along the way in our individual careers that have helped shape us into the tenacious spirits we are today! Two of our favorite books are The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson. We firmly believe in living a life of intentionality, love, and purpose. Both books are living examples of our core values that we strive for at Adventure Out Loud.
Our family and friends without a doubt have been our biggest cheerleaders through this whole adventure! Luckily, we received nothing but love and encouragement throughout the process. During a time of uncertainty and when most people were playing it safe, we chose to ignite a business during a global pandemic. We had our squad consistently checking in with the process and asking how they could support.
