We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Shukov and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Choosing to work with great people. One line in the Sugar Paper internal brand statement reads, “It’s not just the paper that makes it Sugar Paper, it’s the people.” And by this we mean our team, our customers, our vendors, and our suppliers. We choose to work with great people who share our values and you can feel that within our organization. We spend a large portion of our lives at work and we want it to be time well spent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Sugar Paper started with an antique letterpress and a love of paper. We still print by hand every day in our Los Angeles studio. We now have three retail stores in California and do partnerships with companies like Nordstrom and Target, but our roots are alive and well. We print stationery the old fashioned way and you can feel the difference when you hold a piece of Sugar Paper in your hands. We’re really proud of our craft.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Everyone from out of town loves going to the Brentwood Country Mart. It’s such a scene, but in the best possible way. Breakfast at FarmShop is where Hollywood deals are made and there can often be a celebrity siting since the Mart has so many nooks and crannies where famous people can hide.

Friday: I would start with a late breakfast at FarmShop and then do some shopping at some of my favorite Country Mart shops (Clare V! Goop! Sezane! And obviously Sugar Paper). From there we’d hit the beach for some sun.

Saturday: My go-to hike is Will Roger’s State Park, but sadly it was lost in the Palisades Fire. It will come back and I will be the first to hike it when it reopens. The views span from the Ocean to Downtown LA. After the hike, we head to Venice for a coffee and lunch at Gjelina.

Sunday: We’d make sure it was the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month so that we could hit up the Pasadena Flea! It’s one of the best flea markets in the world hosted at the Rose Bowl with such great vendors and interesting finds.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
