We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Des Vignes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheryl, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was that I am creating a brand that is about more than just pretty clothing. I wanted my clothing to be sustainable while making all body types feel confident and sexy. In an industry that is the second largest polluter in the world, I felt it would be irresponsible of me to ignore this problem while creating a brand.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think what sets my business apart from others is that I create my sizing based on multiple body types, where as most brands only fit on a size small model and just grade up. The problem with just grading up and not actually fitting on other size models is that you lose the essence of the style and the fit isn’t as good.
I’m most proud that I’ve been able to start a brand from scratch by myself without funding from anyone. Like most small businesses, I’m a one woman show. I literally handle everything from designing, sewing, building a website, shipping orders, social media marketing and more. I never thought I would be capable of doing it because I didn’t think it would be perfect or I had enough resources but I’m amazed at how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time.
It definitely wasn’t easy getting to where I am now. I started my business last year in 2020 while I was unemployed and I literally put my all into my business. Some lessons I learned along the way would be to not overthink everything and just put myself out there. I’ve learned so much along the way and my biggest challenge was not letting my perfectionist nature get in the way of my progress. I think it’s really hindering to a lot of creatives that we let perfectionism stop us from releasing our art into the world because we don’t think it’s perfect yet. I’ve learned nothing will ever be perfect and I just need to share my talents and just continue to grow and get better.
I want the world to know as a black owned business I’m fully dedicated to being an advocate for body positivity and inclusivity. I know a lot of brands try and do it because it’s trendy but my mission truly comes from the heart because I’m constantly listening to the women around me and how they feel about the fashion industry. It frustrates me when close friends or strangers feel unseen or under represented with the fashion today mostly catering to small / thin women. Des Vignes is here to change that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The perfect weekend outing with my best friend would start with brunch at my favorite place “Met Her At A Bar.” This place is very cute and chill and the waffles & berries are amazing. Next we would go shopping on Melrose to thrift cool vintage pieces at the Flea market. My favorite place to go to dinner is Ysabel so that’s next on our list. The perfect way to end the night would be drinks on a rooftop at EP & LP.
We would start the next day with a morning hike in Pasadena at Eaton Canyon followed by lunch at Oh my Burger in Gardena. Oh my burger is my favorite guilty pleasure. After lunch I would want to go to the Zuma Beach in Mailbu and end the weekend with a 120 min massage at The Now in Santa Monica.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out my support system which is my family, friends and boyfriend, without them I wouldn’t be able to successfully do what I do.
