We had the good fortune of connecting with Chesca Musica and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chesca Musica, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Writing and singing songs makes me happy. I write and sing songs every day. I love to write songs in the morning. Music is certainly my medicine for a better day. I would not be where I am today without songwriting; it is something I truly appreciate on a daily basis.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I write and sing Pop Songs in English and Spanish. I have released five studio albums independently and have performed in New York City and Los Angeles in different venues such as the Bitter End, Drom, Bowery Electric, Hotel Café, the Mint and the London in West Hollywood. My songs include themes about vertigo, sadness, heartbreak and the realities of being a female in the music industry. Many of my songs have been played at New York Fashion Week, AVP Pro Beach Volleyball tournament, Crunch Fitness Club, Gap stores and New York City parades, restaurants and nightclubs. While there can be a lot of rejection in the music industry, I will always continue to focus on my songs. It has taken a lot of practice to not listen to the negativity and all of the outside noise while continuing on this journey. I have listened to my intuition entirely and will always have an immense amount of gratitude for writing and singing songs. I always say, if only one person feels connected to my music and feels less alone, then I’ve done my job as a songwriter.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take my friend to La La Land Kind Cafe or Yeems Coffee. I would also take them to the Getty Museum to see the amazing artwork, beautiful architecture and the captivating views of Los Angeles. Also, the Venice Canals and the Griffith Observatory are a must-see! For food, I would recommend Benny’s Tacos on West Third Street and Kazan Ramen in Beverly Hills. Both restaurants are delicious!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother who has inspired me throughout my journey. She fought hard for her education in Mexico City during a time when going to Law School in the early 1950’s as a woman was incredibly rare. My grandmother had a successful career as an attorney and was the first female notary in Mexicali, Mexico. She was an incredible role model and her story is truly inspiring. Some of my songs that were inspired by my grandmother include, “Mijita” and “HerStoria”. I hope my music can open up a dialogue about the importance of choice and motivate women around the world to follow their dreams and happiness despite the obstacles the patriarchy has designed for all of us.
