We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbara Biosah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbara, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
One of the main goals for DUMEBI is to create more job opportunities for local fashion graduates and young adults by having all our productions manufactured in-house. The Fashion industry has always been so competitive with many graduates finding it very hard to find a good paid job in fashion after graduation. Many graduates have to intern for years or change fields because of the lack of job opportunities as most fashion houses manufacture their products overseas to save on labour costs.

We also want to use our platform to help spread awareness of Sickle Cell Anaemia -This is an inherited blood disorder that mainly effects people of African Descent around the world including myself. We have created the Gideon’s Treasure Foundation to help build much needed awareness and support Sickle Cell sufferers around the world. The Fashion industry is very influential and using DUMEBI’s growing platform to highlight this could be very impactful.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Exotic Couture for Goddesses – DUMEBI is a luxury womenswear clothing brand. What sets DUMEBI apart is that It’s an authentic fusion of my African heritage, my love for European Renaissance art mixed with a British modern twist & Parisian flair. What makes me proud is the satisfaction I get from clients and how confident and beautiful they feel in my products. I’m still growing and learning and it has definitely not been easy but I truly love what I do which makes all the hard work worth it. There are so many obstacles running a fashion business but I take each day as it comes, I never let myself get discouraged and know that as long as I believe in my work and talent and I work hard I can overcome any obstacle. I want people to know that DUMEBI is built on passion, that each creation is made with love and that our main goal is to make our clients happy, create a great work environment for our employees who are passionate about creating and impact the world with beauty, elegance and art. Art has helped a lot if people overcome pain including myself and I believe it has the power to help so many more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love LA, I love the weather, I love that I can wear all my cute dresses and heels especially being from London where its mostly cold. I visit LA a lot, I’m there every year and I spend at least 3 months each time!

The Grove – super cute, lots of restaurants, shops, bakeries and even a cinema so you can have a full day of fun there

Rodeo Drive – Just too pretty and again lots of restaurants, amazing luxury boutiques to gawk at, great place for photos and if you are a HUGE fan of Pretty Woman like I am you will love to visit The Beverly Wilshire hotel which is of course gorgeous there is outdoor seating so you can people watch whilst drinking a fabulous cocktail or mocktail

Henrys cafe on Robertson boulevard – This is by far my fave cafe, outdoor seating on a beautiful street with local fashion boutiques, amazing menu that is super cheap for the area. I love this spot I’ve had many business lunches here, I work with interns here or even just to have a lovely coffee and enjoy the view

Catch LA WeHo – I love this place!! I actually spent my 25th birthday there and it was fabulous the perfect rooftop spot with a delicious menu. Such a vibe and a must visit

Fearless LA church – If you love God and want an amazing church service with an incredible sermon head to Downton on Sundays and attend Fearless LA Church you will absolutely love it! I’m there every Sunday when I’m in LA.

Pasadena Old Town – Super cute town, eat, drink, hang out

Santa Monica – Spend a lovely day in Santa Monica, I found it a little colder there because of the beach but there is a funfair, beach and a cool British store because I think a lot of Brits live in that area.

Laguna – Beach time and also a super cute town full of shops and lots of places to eat!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout to my super beautiful & talented sister Justina Biosah. She is my biggest fan, for as long as I can remember she always pushed me to be the best version fo myself and to take risks, She’s an incredible actress, a writer, singer and model and has also been an amazing Brand Ambassador for DUMEBI. She has so many amazing upcoming projects in film & Music and her talent inspires me.
