We had the good fortune of connecting with Chetney Stone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chetney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Understanding my parents background coupled with the truths of their era, I decided to take a risk on myself by following my heart. It has been a dream of mine since the age of 8 to become a model, baker and a lawyer. Thus far I have accomplished two out of three. I’ve known from a young age where I wanted to be in life. Starting my own business affords me with the privilege of doing what I love without it feeling like work. It also offers me freedom from the compete and redundant cycle of “go to school, get a good job working for someone else and retire”. Most importantly, it affords me the opportunity to assist my loved ones on a larger scale.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I was raised in New York City, specifically the Bronx. New York City is often referred to as the “concrete jungle.” If you can succeed in New York City, you can succeed anywhere, according to the saying. That’s because in my hometown, fantasies weren’t often realized.
I made the decision to become a baker and open my own bakery/restaurant when I was just eight years old. I thought of food as a unifier. I was intrigued by the happiness and love that surrounded the kitchen table. I then realized that I wanted to use the creativity and beauty of food and desserts to offer joy to my family, friends, and community.
I completed pastry school at the age of 18, attained the title of pastry chef, and began working in a variety of restaurants in the tri-state region. But something was still missing. My passion and dream remained unfulfilled. I worked as a pastry chef in places that I did not own. I started my business because I was determined to realize my childhood goal.
I can say with pride that I am getting closer to realizing my childhood dream. My company is well-established. It gives me tremendous pleasure to own and run a business that graciously serves my family, friends, and community by creating beautiful cakes and delicious treats.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really think that there is no place like home. Without a doubt, I’ll take him to Elizabeth, New Jersey, where we’ll have a quick chat and lunch at my restaurant. I want them to experience the authentic Puerto Rican dish firsthand. We are only a short drive from New York, so I’ll be taking them to several tourist attractions and making sure they never forget what I’m about to show and let them experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my mother for never giving up on me. Oftentimes, individuals do not understand your desires and goals; especially when you’re an entrepreneur. My mother has always supported the choices I’ve made. She encourages every neurotic idea of mine. Never wavering, judging or criticizing. Mom, you are my constant. Optimistic, loving and faithful. I am who I am because you believe in me. Thank you.
My son is the second person I must honor. He is my pride, joy and driving force to push through all barriers. Every goal I set is with him in mind. Although, he is just a toddler, he has taught me selflessness, strength, and resiliency. Birthing him was the rebirth of myself. My confidence and self esteem have been restored. Your existence repels me to strive for the very best, always. Mommy loves you.
