We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheuk Yau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheuk, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Being successful is not only about how much money you make. I define being successful as how much you can help others using your expertise. For example, many clients have things that they want and for a particular reason. However, their requests are not always possible given the restrictions. So, our job is to provide as many solutions as possible. When their problems are solved, the feeling of being able to help someone is the feeling of success. Not only are there technical problems, there is also a budget in every project. Of course when there is a generous budget, the things that clients request in their space is a lot easier to obtain. However, our creative aspects to each project is not limited to the amount of money spent by the client. There are many different ways to a space unique. One important term used in architecture is form and space. This helps us create a space that is both visually appealing while still being functional. Speaking of the functionality of a space, the floor plan plays a crucial role in defining how the space actually serves its purpose. Some clients don’t know how important the floor plan is. However, when I explain how it functions from the inside out, they begin to understand its significance in how it impacts the overall design. Once the space is completed and my clients begin using the space, they often come back to express how they now truly understand the importance of the floor plan and why I was so persistent on making something happen. The layout directly influences how well rooms function and flow together. A thoughtful floor plan elevates not just the aesthetic, but also the usability and comfort, which ensures that every area serves its intended purpose efficiently. Finally, success to me is being able to provide for my family and ensuring that my workers and subcontractors can provide for theirs as well. Through the skills and knowledge that we bring, we turn the concepts on a piece of paper into reality and deliver exactly what our clients envision.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business combines both construction and design, setting us apart from typical construction companies or design firms. From the very beginning of the design stage, we already consider what will happen during construction. This proactive approach allows us to anticipate and minimize potential issues early on. During construction, if challenges arise, we’re able to make well-informed decisions that balance technical solutions with a designer’s perspective. This integrated process not only streamlines communication but also helps our clients save both time and money—leading to greater overall satisfaction.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend is visiting Los Angeles, I always recommend they check out the Manhattan Beach area. It offers a great mix of restaurants and shops, with something for everyone. Just next to the commercial area, the surrounding residential neighborhood is also worth exploring. As you drive around, you’ll see many beautifully designed homes, each with unique architecture and thoughtful design concepts.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Tom Quach at Lee’s Sandwiches Corporation. At the early stage of my career, he gave me a remarkable opportunity—one that I will always cherish. He trusted me completely to design and build out all of his restaurants, offering both the freedom and responsibility to design and bring my ideas to life. Thanks to his support, I was able to take concepts from paper and turn them into real-world spaces. While the project may not have seemed large to others, to me, it was an invaluable gift and a powerful source of encouragement. I’m truly thankful for the opportunity he gave me and the trust he had in me since the beginning.
